Now that we can have avatars, what is yours, why did you choose it and what does it mean (to you, to others, both)?
Ill go first&
What it is: Mine is a Black Widow spider.
Why: I like them.
Meaning: To me, theyre small, solitary, dark and dangerous when need be, like I am. To others, they offer a visual warning to be left the hell alone with the means to back it up.
-
You're scaring me...
No avatar yet, I'm thinking about it though.
-
Mine is cut down (to retain proportions) from this photo I took:
Tis one of the better photos, I think, produced by my lackluster photography skills.
The subject is a Civil War memorial statue located in my town; and while it was specifically designated for those soldiers, I think it for some it may represent more than just that.
-
Nice shot!
-
Spiders yucky. I've always found avatars to be distracting eye-candy for those raised on MTV. I'm leaving them on for right now, though, to see how I like them.
-
Not me, here's mine. A lovely parting shot of my home for 48 months.
-
You lived on the ship, or in the general area?
-
On the ship...
-
In the words of that guy on "A Mighty Wind," wha' happen?
-
SinkEx
Sink Exercise. Her last duty was to be a target. Look up USS Buchanan (DDG-14) and you'll get the whole story. It's actually a pretty good one. One note was she was in the same squadron as the Turner Joy and was involved in the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. She was also the third with that name, the first being given to the Brits and used as the battering ram during the Raid on St. Nazaire. ANOTHER good story! Buchanan was a Confederate Officer and she was the only ship in the fleet named after such. There is speculation that there will not be a 4th Buchanan because of that and PC kind of stuff. I served under the reign of "Jolly" Roger Barnett who was the only Captain in the fleet authorized to fly the skull and crossed bones and did.
-

OK, now explain that. You wild and wacky squids.
-
Um, "I can't figure out how/where to add an avatar."
I presume this is somewhere under my personal setings, right?
[Edit: I figured it out. Note that I went with mine own ugly mug.]
-
The "Jolly Roger" is the black flag with the skull and crossed bones that pirates flew when at sea. The Navy considered it an illegal flag but authorized Barnett to use it as our battle flag. He had pull, he had a Doctorate in PoliSci and had worked with Nixon on SALT II. Each ship had a "battle flag" that it flew while out to sea. Ours was the Jolly Roger. So you're "talking" to one of the few people in this day and age that has sailed under the Jolly Roger. How impressive is THAT?
Meanwhile, Barnett was only there cause he needed a command under his belt to get his Eagle. He was a miserable SOB for the most part. He was bucking for promotion and we were the stepping stones, always volunteering us to do one inane thing or another. Last I knew he was teaching at the Naval War College in Newport RI but has probably retired by now. He got his Eagle but never any stars. Which would have been expected for the career of someone with his attitude. Believe it or not only the REALLY good people get the stars.
-
I have a squirrel, all you have to do is hang out with me when I'm on a comedy roll and you'll know why.
-
I like kittens.
Avatars are good as a way to identify authors with a glance.
-
Just 'cause I could..........
-
Nice shot!
Thanks!

Taken from navsource.org:
The ship, decommissioned 1 October 1991 and stricken from the Navy List 20 November 1992, was hit by three Hellfire missiles, three Harpoon missiles and a 2,400-pound laser-guided bomb, but did not sink. The job was finally done by 200 pounds of explosive charges set by an EOD team.
Frakkin' frak!
Stubborn old gal, huh?
-
My first ship was gutted to make a berthing-barge.
USS Proteus.
She was in Tokyo Harbor when the Japanese surrendered.
-
Yup, the exercise was done on the 13th, what the blurb doesn't mention is the torpedo that was supposed to finish the job failed to detonate. So they sent EOD in on the 14th. Everybody likes to think she refused to go down on the 13th but was ok with it on the 14th. Her hull number. :cue Twlight Zone music:
BTW, it turned out my old XO was a 3 star when the exercise took place and pretty much in charge of the whole damn Pacific fleet. We had known each other fairly well in the old days. So when I heard about the Sinkex I emailed him and asked if he wouldn't mind dropping a nice big bomb on her just for me. So to this day I claim the 2,400 lb bomb as MINE!!

I'd rather we didn't use avatars. One of the reason I liked THR and APS was I don't have to worry about NSFW pictures.
It's a more mature user base here, so I probably still don't have to worry...please keep them out of sig lines, though. Nothing is more annoying than having to look at someones ugly car or cat every other post.
-
I dunno. It just felt like me, and I like it.
-
i had another one, but yesterday i saw El Tejon's web gallery and i could not resist
-
I DO note a bit of a resemblance there gewehr
-
Hey Wingnut...
-
Well, I am an administrator and moderator, so why not a watchdog?
-
I'm with wingnutx, I find them useful for quick identification. So long as they are kept small to load quickly, I like them. However, I've never been too fond of sig pics. As for NSFW pics, I believe those would be against the rules, so I don't think we'll see them.
Oh, and my pic is Fred Fredburger. Why? 'cause I find him hilarious, and I love cartoons. About the only TV I ever watch (or can tolerate) is Cartoon Network.
EDIT: This forum software has a feature where it gives you a warning if somebody adds a post to the thread while you're typing your response! Cool!
-
280Plus- That's her!
A complete rust bucket by the time I got to her in 89, but she has some serious history.
She's a berthing barge in Bremerton now, with the superstructure cut off.
-
Mine is the cover of "Relayer" by Yes, currently one of my favorite albums. Just thought it was cool, couldn't think of anything else.
-

You can just check "Don't show avatars" in your layout controls in your profile.
My cats are all either pretty or ruggedly handsome, anyway.
-
CatsDieNow,
I don't like avietars, either, but you can turn them off and you'll never see them.
Whoever said NSFW pictures wouldn't happen - they may not last, but they will happen sooner or later.
-
I'll just use the same avatar that I use on other forums
-
Anyone dumb enough to use a NSFW picture as an avatar can simply put a bigger one as a pic in a thread.
-
Mine is the symbol that represents my Grove, and it's the avatar that I use on the forums there. I got used to using it (and seeing it next to my name) there, so I decided to put it up here as well.
-BP
-
Cool! I have turned them off. Many nifty options on this new software.
Everyone may proceed with their avatar discussion now.
-
It's my Arabic name in class. Qais, he was a poet - sort of a Romeo and Juliet story, but set in the pre-Mohammed ME.
-
What else?
-
Mine's a character (GIR) from the cartoon Invader Zim that was on some years ago, but that I just discovered.
-
The avatar here is a variation of one I use across the 'Net, since my primary image choice does not scale correctly for the size limits here on APS ( and I've not yet bothered to adjust the original to fit ). Why Scorpios? 'Cause he's scary smart, borderline obsessive about his goals, willing to do just about anything and suffer just about anything to see his goals fulfilled, an individual of great strength and great weakness, a complex and sometimes twisted individual. Like your's truly in some respects.
-
If you like Zim, then check out Jhonen Vasqez's "Squee" & Roman Dirge's "Lenore" comic books.
-
I stopped looking into other Jhonen Vasquez stuff after I briefly looked at his first comic, "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac." Pretty messed up. I'm not big on comics (I much prefer cartoons), but if Squee is more like Zim than Johnny, I might take a look.
-
Picture of me, stylized in photoshop.
-
Squee is more funny, crazy stuff like Zim.
-
The Bonnie Blue speaks to my heritage
-
Scorpios? Explain.
-
Scorpios? Explain.
Scorpius...From Farscape.
-
My newly chosen avatar is based upon my job and my beliefs. A gavel, as I am a judicial officer (magistrate) and the flag because, despite all of the warts, the blemishes, the politicians, and such, I still believe in this country and what it truly stands for. I still believe in justice for all, regardless of race, wealth, gender, etc. Well, at least i try to make that happen in my courtroom.
-

Interesting to find out the Proteus was the much reknown sub tender in Holy Loch that everybody wanted to get duty on.
-
Proteus was in Scottland in 62 and 63, then Guam from 64-93.
The Simon Lake was the Holly Loch tender when I was in the fleet.
Proteus was the only tender to get cut in half and stretched like a limo
http://www.tendertale.com/tenders/119/119.html
-
Oops, wrong tender! I was in Guam '79 IIRC so I probably saw her there.
-
Hey, it's Buckaroo Banzai!
-
Jack Bauer
I'm a 24 fan, and I like Jack's my way or the body bag attitude.
-
Well, I've used the original of the white guy with the wildly flailing dreads before, but thought a little superimposition of our Beloved Leader Dubya into the context would be fun.
Although it looks nothing like me in reality (I'm told I bear a strong resemblance to John Goodman), it does reflect a touch of my contrarian personality.
I guess it's a nod to the fact that my father has referred to me as "idiot savant" for as many years as I can remember. Thin line between genius and madness, you know!
-
Indy. Merely because of a great conversation about four years ago on a cold winter night, participated in by the galoot who got me interested in guns, Shiner Bock (but not at the same time), THR, and indirectly with this board.
The expression is priceless, the quote underneath is true, and it truly reflects my outlook on life as of late.
-
Only just added mine - another with a patriotic flavor.
Some very interesting diversity here with all the examples!
-
<<< My avatar. I like airplanes, stealth bombers are cool, I'm patriotic, and it's the first picture I pulled out of my collection of avatars. I'll probably leave it alone for a while, but I might change it eventually to something that better represents me.

Saw it on the 'net and loved it. It's cropped (and resized) from the original.
-
Fistful,
Uh, no.
-
tyme, all I see is a hand grabbing a apple. What am I missing?
-
Ummm, 'cause it's me.
On a particularly dreary morning, just before the first sip of coffee.
-
I figured it out.
It's not a hand grabbing an apple. It's a hand that just released its hold on an apple.
A poisoned apple, and a hand that's attached to a pretty, yet unconscious young thing with the name of Snow White.
-
Mine is a pic of me in New Orleans during the post-Katrina fiasco.
-
I turned them off as well. Distracting.
-
I turned them off as well. Distracting.
To each their own I guess. I rather like the way APS as implemented avatars. Fixed size more or less, so not huge and monstrous flash avatars. I've found on forums that use avatars, I'm able to scan down the avatar displays and get a sense of how the discourse is running, based on the posting patterns of the avatar owners. Its right less than a 1/4 of the time, but then that suprise is half fun of participating in a forum.
Now about this sig images.... : scrutiny :
-
Now we just need to find you an avatar, fistful...
-
Avatars don't bother me 'tall; small as they are. I have turned off signatures though because big signature pictures do annoy me.
-
Mine is a pic of the man, himself, Michael Schumacher. I'm getting over my tiny bit of depression with him retiring. F1 has now officially lost its charisma.
-
F1 has now officially lost its charisma.
Maybe, but Kimi Raikkonen is keeping it interesting
Raikkonen interview

It's Faye receiving a headlock/noogie from Dora, both of Questionable Content (www.questionablecontent.net), from this comic:
http://www.questionablecontent.net/comics/740.png
Uh, I was totally gonna post the comic as a picture, and then I read it again >.> QC doesn't actually have a lot of "questionable content" as far as nudity or violence or even much harsh language, but that comic seems to be the outspoken exception, hehe.
I like it because Faye's expression (and, incidentally, her shirt in that comic) is priceless.

Its me, with a nice 22" Brown trout.

My avatar is gone, again.
Did I miss something?
-
A lot of avatars seem to be missing. In the case of you and Bogie, I'm not complaining.
-
My spider avatar disappeared. Oh well, found a kitty.
-
Mines a popcorn smiley because I like to sit back and watch this circus!
-
I think if you uploaded your avatar to the old server, its probably gone now.
-
Can't get mine to upload.
Fistful needs to bring back Clint, there was certain je-ne-sais-quoi about it. The monkey just doesn't cut it.
And I find dasmi's quite distrubing........
-
Celtic rider
-
My Honor and Defend Liberty patch seems to have made the transfer... might be time to update it though.
-
I think Fistful should switch to Lash La Rue

can someone tell a computer challenged feller how to install an avatar

can someone tell a computer challenged feller how to install an avatar
Click on Profile, then under the header "Modify profile" you will find "Forum Profile Information". Click on this as well. Now you'll see the option of "Personalized picture". Either link to a picture (click on the proper circle to choose this option) or upload a picture from your own computer (though it seems like I can't upload anything at the moment)
-
thanks tried that
The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.

Use one from the internet then - either steal one, or upload one of your own. I did the later.

If you have a photobucket or flickr account, you can link to a photo in that account as an avatar. It's free and it saves space (and maybe money, since it's not taking up precious room on the APS's host server).
Brad
-
tried photobucket trick too
-
When you go to photobucket, you have to make your album public to be able to link it into the avatar.
top right corner, click on Account Options
Where it says album settings, click on edit album settings.
-
You have the wrong URL. You used the email & IM link. The 'Direct Link' below that should work.
Try this as your URL:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg62/cassandrasdaddy/Picturekidandme030.jpg
You used:
http://s245.photobucket.com/albums/gg62/cassandrasdaddy/?action=view¤t=Picturekidandme030.jpg
Which opens up a photobucket page, not the JPG alone.
-
thankyou all verymuch
-
^^ What G45 said.
Plus, the pic you linked to is freakin HUGE and the aspect ratio is all wrong for a square avatar image.
I cropped it to a 72x72 @300dpi for you. I tried to attach it but the attachments aren't working at the moment. PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it.
Brad

Ed,
Check your e-mail.

Yeah, ...daddy. When I look at this page, everyone else's avatar pops up more or less instantly, even with my antiquated dial-up connection. Yours takes ... well, it makes forever sound like not such a very long time.
Doesn't Photobucket offer a utility or an option to save images as avatars? That's what you're looking for,
-
I am just waiting for the upload to work, again.
-
I took a look at it and uploads should be working correctly. Haven't tested it myself though...
-
Yup, me again,,
I'm getting this when I try to upload a new avatar...
An Error Has Occurred!
The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.
-
Getting the same error here as 280plus.
-
testing...
-
OK, it really was broken. Should be fixed now (and I'll go ahead and check other paths out as well.)
-
Looks like smileys might have been having an issue as well. Fixed that folder too.
-
yay!
-
Thanks for the good work!
-
To the delight of all, mine own ugly mug has returned!!!
-
My eyes! My eyes! Ahhhhggg! Zeke's got himself a new avatar!
<Plorp> <Plorp>
Poke'dem out. That's better.
On the upside, at least my avatar is working again. Thanks for all your hard work, Derek.
-
Hey did you folks know there is a way to turn off all the avatars and sig lines on here. Saves space and is much easier on old eyes.
-
Why do you shoot grandpas?
-
...and how do you field-dress 'em?......
-
-----but they can be a little gamey and stringy------
-
Par boiling will take care of most of that...
-
Add some carrots, celery, potatoes, etc...and you would have a nice soup.
-
Add some carrots, celery, potatoes, etc...and you would have a nice soup.
...and save Social Security.....
-
Old thread is old.
Currently I'm running through a few random avatars I've found through my internet travels.
I appear to be too lazy to change from Phoenix Wright: Attorney at Law being coffee'd.
-
Actually I have this great recipe I read in one of those history of the South Pacific books I have.
-
I was on dialup for so long; it took me forever to pull up everyone else's crap. Now that I've joined the 20th century I'll have to add one. Maybe tomorrow.
