whedon wrote it up after reading Gettysburg, thus the obvious western/civil war flar.

I guess I missed the episode with the flar.   :P

The music, however, will never be paralleled.  Especially the score from Serenity.  =)

I also like the Firefly music, especially the show theme and the music in Out of Gas and The Message.  The Firefly music reinforces the whole concept and theme of the show.

The Serenity score, though, is fantastic.  It is poignant and sad and beautiful.  (You can keep the Oaty Bar tune).

Here's the one from the very end of Serenity (after the credits) that comes from Firefly:

Does anyone but me have a hard time believing that is Summer Glau on the Serenity movie poster ?

Same here.  Maybe it's because I don't watch much TV or movies, but I can't think of any other space westerns off the top of my head...

Dude, most of those are graphic novel soft porn trash with little distribution.  Others are video games.  We're talking about movies/TV shows that are obviously space-western, not some weirdo trying to shoehorn Alien or Babylon 5 into their pet space-western theory.

As far as Cowboy Bebop, that is anime.  Nobody with good personal hygiene is likely to be familiar with it.  <Does research>  It played on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.  Not exactly wide release.

She looks like that on my Special Edition DVD cover, too.  Harold Tuttle must have gotten bored and photoshopped her for them.

Another recent reference in Castle:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_L-uoxmfe8&NR=1

At the time I saw this during the episode, I wasn’t sure whether it was meant to be a Firefly reference.  Watching it from the video, I can see Castle is flashing “Two by two” with his fingers as he puts on the blue gloves.

And for those who want to rewatch the ultimate, not-so-subtle, Firefly reference:

Maybe not a wide release for old people.  But I don't know a single person in my age group who does watch some Adult Swim show and who isn't at least aware of Cowboy Bebop.

I watched Cowboy Bebop to see what all the Firefly thread interruptions were about.  It was fun, even impressive, with great graphics and music.

In no way is Firefly any kind of ripoff of Bebop, though.

A ripoff would be more like, Windows copying the Mac OS, or Android copying iPhone; something like that.

I quite like Cowboy Bebop, actually. Not generally big on anime but I like that.

Also, I'm still puzzled by how space western is cliche and tired.

Firefly is a ripoff of Bebop only in the space western area.  And Bebop is more of a space action show with a western flare, whereas Firefly is pretty much space western.

Probably the MOST space western show is Trigun, but Trigun got a bit silly at times.

I wouldn't care if it was cliche, I still <3 it.

Westerns in general are seen as cliche and tired.

What's your age group, by the way?

At 33, I identify less with my generational cohort, and more with others like myself, too smart to pay for TV.   :P

An interview with cast & crew of Castle.  I thought the last bit was hilarious.

I'm 26.  Though I used to teach drumline with a bunch of guys who are about 22 right now.  Like I said, among my friend who are in their early-mid 20's, I don't know a single one who didn't watch some Adult Swim show, Sealab, Aqua-Teen, and the Brak show being the favs.  Whether they were actually fans of anime I don't know, but one cannot watch Adult Swim and at least not be aware of it.  My main point is to contest the idea that Adult Swim is not "wide release".  And as I said, maybe not to old people.  But for people in their late teens, early 20's, Adult Swim is a pretty big deal.  If an anime show has gotten popular enough to be dubbed and make it into American TV that is popular with young adults, it's made it far indeed.

I was watching the latest Castle, and about half-way through I recognized that one of the actors was Bill Bellamy.   :O

There's a blast from the nineties.  I couldn't even remember who or what he used to be.
