"Modern Marvels' on the History Channel did a show about this very topic a few years ago.  The plans for the capitol city were quite elaborate, but it turned out that the marshy ground in Berlin would not have supported the weight of the larger buildings.  They actually built a massive concrete cylinder to measure the degree to which the buildings would have sunk into the ground.  When the results showed that the buildings would sink too far, the plans were largely abandoned.

Actually, no.

The name Third Reich (Drittes Reich, ‘Third Empire’) invoked a historical reference to the Holy Roman Empire of the Middle Ages and the German Empire, 1871–1918.

No, I believe the first Reich was supposed to be the Holy Roman Empire, and the second Reich referred to the 1871-1918 Empire.  In either case, be careful about using such terminology, as it is associated with the NAZI ideology. 

Oh, I see I was beaten to the punch.  And by a Jewish guy, no less.  Gettin' all up in my virtual lebensraum.

My ancestors were 2nd Reich folks.

My Germanic origin that were Artistocrats all fled to the US (Iowa) before unification. The yeomen ancesters fled here from Germanic "states" in the 1830's all to present day Iowa.

I wish my Native American ancesters would have said go back home :)

My ancestors got tired of being pulled off their farms in Schleswig-Holstein to fight is some Prussian flunky's wars.

Sure, they got to slaughter lesser Austrians and Frenchmen by the dozen, but who was going to bring in the harvest?

So, they came on over to Iowa after whooping up on the French and actually got to farm.
