I can’t remember where but I saw a study where they looked at bear attacks where the victim was able to fire at least 1 shot that hit the bear. The conclusion was that, within limits, the caliber used is irrelevant to survival. .22lr and comparable power levels were pretty ineffective but anything 9mm on up was pretty equally effective.
