The 6th of June.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

I am ever so grateful for the Greatest Generation and their sacrifices.

Amen, scout.

I echo adively, as well. I'm saddened that we are soon losing all of that generation.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

From the closing credits of the film of the same title;

THE LONGEST DAY
“Many men came here as soldiers;
many men will pass this way.
Many men will count the hours
as they live The Longest Day.
Many men are tired and weary;
Many men are here to stay.
Many men won’t see the sunset,
when it ends The Longest Day.
The Longest Day, The Longest Day,
This will be The  Longest Day.
Filled with hope and filled with fears,
Filled with blood and sweat and tears.
Many men the mighty thousands
Many men to victory.
Marching on right into battle
in The Longest Day in history.”

To the men who did the real thing 69 years ago.
There are so few left.

Scout and adively pretty much covered it all for me too.
Would you exchange
a walk-on part in a war
for a lead role in a cage?

Just talked to a guy today who lost a relative on D day- a paratrooper, he never made it to the ground alive.
 Getting off those landing craft, what a bullet funnel. The only possible thing worse than going would be staying put.  And the boat crews-run after run into that hell-
