I love how they mention that .380 popularity sky-rocketed in the last decade and can't say why. I know KT was not the first for a micro locked breech .380, that would be Seecamp I believe. and if you think Kel-Tec is bad for new product availability that demonstrates a lack of knowledge about an LWS waitlist.

I just want them to get the issues with the problems with the R51 worked the hell out.

I made it through the first two paragraphs and my editor brain exploded. I can't remember when I've encountered anything that badly written.

(Actually, I can remember -- but I was his editor, and we got it cleaned up before publication. Names will not be named.)

I just can't get excited about Remington pistols. There are a lot of high quality brands out there and remington can't even make an 870 right anymore.

Chris

That was my recollection.

The Seecamp and clones are much nastier to shoot then the later polymer framed mouseguns like the Keltec .32ACP & .380ACP and its imitators.

Hopefully, remington can get its act together.

???  Looks a little like a certain Ruger entry into the .380 field ... which, IIRC, was itself basically a copy of yet another entry into the .380 field ......  [popcorn]

I had high hopes for the R51. That said, I know a gentleman who bought a R1 1911 and had no issues with it. I couldn't see paying anything near their MSRP for a polymer .380 pistol.

Was the AMT Backup a locked breech design?

I shot the NAA copy and it wasn't too bad.  Snappy, but not a huge amount worse than the KT/Ruger 380s.  Where the Seecamp and NAA had blowback and mass, the KT/Ruger was lightweight but with a locked breech.

I'm guessing the "RM" stands for "Remington's Mulligan."

Rumor I had heard was that Remington's corporate borg had purchased either Seecamp or Rohrbaugh.  (Wikipedia, YMMV says Rohrbaugh).

These days there' not much in the way of open niches in the handgun market.  Issues with the R51 aside, this I find completely uninteresting.

The Remington R1 1911 and the R51 are completely different stories...almost like they are not even made by the same company.

The R51 is a disaster. The R1 is a decent 1911, especially for the money.

That said I don't even see how yet another .380 is even noteworthy. I'd buy a Ruger long before this.

The R51 was an unfortunate disaster. And that was just the aesthetics.

I started this thread thinking that the R51 was a .380. My assumption was that this new little gun was a do-over. And I guess it still might be, in a way. If the new and improved R51 won't sell, they will at least have their toe in the pocket gun market, and can do a 9mm version.

I think the .22 and .380 Backups were blowback, both the single action and double actions. IIRC both had fixed barrels. The large-caliber models would have to have been locked breech.

Horrific thread drift,  but in the past two weeks,  I've bought a S&W Bodyguard .380 and a NIB Ruger LCP.   After shooting both,  I can't tell you how unimpressed I am with the Ruger.   Lousy (comparable) trigger,  and you have to jiggle/smack the mag into place.   In a word,  Nope.

Not impressed at all, and I LIKE Rugers.  I wanted to like the  newish Remington,  but it seems that fell right on it's face.
