Cleaning soot from brick
« on: October 13, 2005, 04:33:18 PM »
I'm installing a small hearth stove into our large fireplace. Previously the fireplace had glass doors on the front, and the front of the fireplace is painted white, and there is some smoke staining on the white front. I'd also like to clean up the inside of the firebox to either clean brick or clean enough that I can paint it white like the rest and not have the black bleed through. So far I'm having some limited luck with TSP and a wire brush. Can anyone reccomend something that will really cut through the black? I was thinking muriatic acid perhaps, since I believe it's used to clean cement type surfaces?

TSP maybe?

I've seen good results from soda blastng...baking soda as a 'sandblast' medium. Of course, it can be messy indoors, but your whole house will smell fresh.

Try some 409 and a scrub brush, or maybe spic and span in water with a scrub brush. That's all I can think of right now. Let me sleep on it! Wink

TSP seemed to work pretty well so far... but any other ideas are welcome

Put another coat of paint on the brick.

Grafitti cleaner. It's tough stuff and WILL take off paint so be careful. It may or may not work. Just a shot in the dark but worth a try.
