Why do you people insist on feeding the troll?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Had a professor in law school who said that several major corporations like Marriott, Hilton, etc., had purchased development rights to major beach front properties in Cuba if/when Castro died, relations normalized, and Cuba became free enough to become a vacation destination.  I've always wondered if there was any truth to that.  And, now that relations are normalizing, I wonder how long until Hilton Havana opens...

There is far more murder and crime in Costa Rica than Cuba.

It is certainly better than Cuba, though.  I just don't see how it makes the point that socialist medicine and education are the causes of the ills Cuba has.

Maybe I'm not understanding where you're coming from. I'm interpreting your remarks to say that Cuba has excellent health and education services, which is something that should be lauded, regardless of how it came about. To me, that sounds a lot like "Mussolini made the trains run on time" (he didn't, really), which is a line used when I was younger by people arguing that even a dictatorship can have its good points. It disregards how any efficiencies came about.

Norway may have a great socialist system if you like that sort of thing, but I don't recall any documentation about the King of Norway having a great time with his buddy Che as they filmed themselves gleefully murdering people to achieve their goals. Not a lot of people rotting in Norwegian prisons either. To say that "Batista did it too" is kind of a cop out.

As for other Central American / Caribbean neighbors of Cuba, Belize and the Cayman Islands seem to have done okay with their British influence. Heck, Belize even has freedom of speech written into its constitution.

I don't think medicine & education are the causes of Cuba's ills.   TYRANNY is the cause, the people are the victims   --- along with education and medicine and economic viability.
For the record I'm not saying Cuba is the ONLY hellhole in the region.   What I AM saying is CUBA IS A HELLHOLE.

I just figured it all meant that rich Latin American oligarchists can run a country into ground almost as well as communist dictators.  They just may not personally murder as many people while doing so.

I would add that trying to use the track record of Latin American countries to show what a great country Cuba is just seems very foolish.

More proof that Cuba is still the people's paradise we've always known it to be even after Fidel took the big dirt nap.
