S'long as I can prove that I'm above, say, eighteen years old. ID shown as verification, no forms or any transaction records.
If you don't think so, please tell me why, and what controls should be in place to determine who can own a M60 machinegun?
-
hell yah.
"but you'll shoot your eye out."
-
Because a crew-served heavy weapon could be used to hold up a convenience store, of course.
-
because it's a horrendous POS and its precursor, the 1919, or its successor, the 240G are far superior weapons. get some standards, man!
-
Well...you should be able to prove that you:
A. Do not have forearms with a circumference larger than 8 inches.
B. Own no bandannas.
C. Are not Rambo.
Anyone caught with an M60 and any combination of the previous attributes is to be assumed plotting terrorist acts.
Or am I thinking of another gun?
-
Well, a semi-auto M60 is available, with nothing more required than a gullible customer, a fat bank account, and a phone call to Warshington...
A full-auto needs a fatter bank account, six months, and sign-offs... I've never heard of age restrictions on NFA - are there?
Oh, and you'll need to send it to one of the specialists and have it reworked for reliability, if it hasn't already.
-
Should I be able to buy an M60 over the counter?
Of course. No questions asked, other than "Cash or credit?"
You should also be able to buy one on the AlGoreInternet and have it shipped anywhere you like. Or buy one at Wal-Mart. Or better yet, Sam's Club, since you will need to bulk buy your ammo.
You'll find that most people here on APS are pretty much pro-freedom.
-

Pfft, my wrist is 8.25.
-

There goes that thread.
For some reason, I assumed he meant a fire-cracker.
Because a crew-served heavy weapon could be used to hold up a convenience store, of course.
Is an M60 considered a heavy weapon? Well, I'm sure it's heavy after a few miles of road march, but other than that...
-

We didn't call it "The Pig" for nothing.

Pretty much mirrors my thoughts.
-
Of course not.
NO ONE should be allowed to buy an M60 over the counter.
They stink.
An MG42, on the other hand...
-

Do you honestly think that the artificially inflated NFA market for full-auto counts as "available?"
-
MIKE!!!!
-
Mail order would be better.
-
I would say that I prefer to buy mine the usual way - out of the back of the NRA trucks at gun shows and PTA meetings, but that'd be giving too much away...
-
I dream of a world in which I can buy alcohol, tobacco, and firearms at the same drivethrough window and use them all before I get home...
-
Didn't they used to come as the surpise in a cracker jack box?

Given every definition of "available" I've ever read, yes.
Now I wouldn't say the current legal process was "convenient", "affordable" or even "Constitutional", but those weren't part of the original question.
-
I'll play this straight. Serious answer, no sarcasm.
The 2nd Amendment to the U. S. Constitution was written and adopted as part of the checks and balances owned by the citizens of the United States against the various governments within these United States. From that perspective, the only plausable answer to the thread question is "Yes".
Without the power to physically resist the government and governmental incroachment, promises of freedoms listed on paper are meaningless.
-
Over, under, along side, through, & any other way in relation to the counter.
I would prefer to see mine come & get dropped on the porch by the lovely brown truck of fun & gadgets, however.
-
Are not Rambo.
Seriously, I'm going to reveal something here. My last name IS Rambo. So leave us alone, dammit!
And I prefer the BAR or an FN MAG 58.
-
Is an M60 considered a heavy weapon? Well, I'm sure it's heavy after a few miles of road march, but other than that...
We didn't call it "The Pig" for nothing.
Is that whence the name? Never had the honor of humping the 60 for very long, never wanted to.
We fired the 240/MAG-58 in OSUT, so I could never get too excited by the 60.
-

A full-auto BAR in 30-06 is a fun thing.
-
Well, I think it's poorly balanced, and not all that ergonomic. I think the designer was going for "futuristic ray gun" and instead got "pig iron."

I joined the Marines in '91 and still had to deal with that POS. It was ugly, heavy and unreliable. Unlike actual swine, it actually got pretty dirty too.
If we were going to steal from the Nazi's we should have had the good graces to not screw up their design in the process.
-
I joined the Marines in '91 and still had to deal with that POS.
My company had a couple of them in 2000. I'm sure there are still plenty in U.S. service, even with active duty units. The National Guard will probably have them until they are replaced by phasers in 2147.
-
Should I be able to buy an M60 over the counter?
Depends....how's your upper body strength and tolerance for handling superheated barrels bare-handed?.....
Preaching to the choir, here.....
-
My last name IS Rambo.
I hope you're not related to the Rambo that used to live in our area
-
If we were going to steal from the Nazi's we should have had the good graces to not screw up their design in the process.
I think the designers threw away all the good features of the MG34/MG42 and said "Let's do the exact opposite to produce the worst weapon possible."
-
As regards being able to buy machine guns in general, I still find it ironic that a greasegun, which would take about two hours in a metalshop or far less for a CNC machine to crank out, with a material cost of about $30 or so...
That gun costs about $25,000 last I'd seen one.
-

Yup. Ours run very well, however, and nobody in the weapons squads want to switch to the 240.

They just don't want to carry the additional weight.

Maybe it's its origin as a coax gun, but the Golf's feel squarer to carry to me. More hard edges to dig into your skin. They aren't that much heavier but they don't carry as comfy.
But I like that they don't seem to hiccup as much.
Which model are you guys using Dev, any idea what production year?
-
Sorry, I don't have any specifics. I only have to worry about my new-to-me M4 (as of last month).
Having carried the 240 during the latter days of OSUT, I would have to agree that it's not just the weight, but the ergonomics as well.
-
I hope you're not related to the Rambo that used to live in our area
Probably not. In any case, I deny relations to anybody who has the last name, and many a time I will deny being related to actual family members.
-
I haven't spent much time with the dismount 240, either, but it's little brother (the 249) is a chip off the square, uncomfortable block.
-
Do you honestly think that the artificially inflated NFA market for full-auto counts as "available?"
Government induced scarcity with extreme price distortion of Constitutional questionability technically is "available".

Hey, just because you didn't get a SAW cozy, don't be knocking the 249. It's a fine mini MG.

Why stop at 18? In many states kids can drive at 15. Why limit it to anybody, why require ID? Why limit it to citizens?
-
I've purchased several M60s over the counter.
Oh, wait, we are talking about the GPMG, not the Smith revolver.
-
So long as you have no prior history of mental defect, you should be able to purchase a machinegun as a citizen.
As far as age restriction goes, if you are old enough to be trusted with a 3,000 lbs vehicle carrying 20 gallons of gasoline and going at 80mph, you should also be trusted to own a firearm.
Regarding automatic weapons in general, current restrictions are ironically in favor of seasoned criminals who know how to shoot. If the common citizenry were allowed UZIs, which can be effective with minimal training and are cheap to own, my prediction is that criminals (and statists) would be far less bold in their activities. Nothing like a shower of lead to cool heels and improve manners.
-

*sigh*
Rabbi, have you ever heard of the "slippery slope" logical fallacy?
Oh, I see that you have:

Funny, that.

Well, then, we will all lose our guns once they find our posts here.
-
No, I havent but why do you ask?
And what does that have to do with my question?
If the OP wants to say that an M240 machine gun is inherently no more dangerous than an automobile then logically anyone who can drive an automobile ought to be able to purchase a machine gun. So why restrict ownership by age or prior criminal record or citizenship status?
-

Me... I wouldn't draw the line at all. But, in the interest of the ever-pleasing comprimise, I'll agree to set the age at 18 for cars and guns.
-
yes.. yes.. absolutly... oh wait, i was thinking of the M1 abrams.....M60MG? yes.. yes.. absolutly...
-

An M1 gets terrible gas mileage. On the plus side, if someone tailgates you, you can throttle up and melt their paint off.

I think an appropriate control would be the clerk having to say "Would you like to supersize that? We have an excellent deal on M2 .50 BMG's."

Isn't there also a U.S. tank called the M60?

I can only think of one, and that is the cost of feeding it.

There was. It's no longer part of the US inventory.

That isn't a reason to restrict it. It might be a reason why an intelligent person wouldn't want one though.
State one good reason why anybody, anybody at all, shouldn't be allowed to buy one.

They were still in NG armories when that guy stole one and rampaged through San Diego, in 1995 though.

Ok. need about a gallon of brain bleach to get rid of *THAT* mental image...

I cant see why we should allow semi auto rifles but not full auto. Heck, I would rather be attacked by one bad guy with a machine gun than two with revolvers.
-
What about pantless in a Rambo shirt?
Hot brass hitting sensitive body parts....... Ummm , I'll pass.
-
Good news, the M60 is available.
Okay, it is really a M4A3 Sherman, but it is close enough.
