I would be interested in your concept of "the right application of force".

These are not countries we would be dealing with.  There is no political department that would/could declare "enough" and sue for peace and agree to surrender terms.  While creating a jihadifrei space is going to be relatively easy, maintaining it is going to be a lifetime slog that will cost more (not in dollars but emotions and morals) than I think our politicians are willing to even seriously consider.

stay safe.

With the possible exception of Afghanistan, the colonization model is a proven template that works well.

Worked pretty well in North America, after we killed off most of the natives  =|

America is the world's worst and most inept imperialist.  We have lost every damned insurgency we fought in the 20th and 21st centuries.  Those we won in the 19th Century (outside of CONUS) were mostly for suck-ass islands that are burdens in the 21st Century.  We have no business trying to colonize anyone.  We just plain suck at it.

Now, killing folk, that we are good at.  Giving troublesome groups/areas the Carthage treatment and coming home to celebrate is within our capability.

Minor nitpick: killing people is within our technical capability, but it's plainly not within our moral/political capability.  We have the means, but we lack the will to use them.

We don't even have the will to deal with our own issues on the micro scale, e.g. the fact of more homicides in Chicago year to date than the sum of these attacks.

We have never been an imperial country, nor have we tried colonizing anywhere. I don't think it's a "tried and failed" it's a "Never tried."

Yeah we pretty much just support evil dictators that allow American corporations to do business in their country.

And we go over and blow up stuff and kill people to show them what nice folks we are so they will adopt the American Way of Life.

That's why the whole world loves the USA.  But if these ISIS guys don't knock it off we might have to start getting rough  :police:

Seems to me the current problems cropped up after we stopped supporting evil dictators.

Technicality:  The South Vietnamese insurgency was defeated.  South Vietnam was invaded by the North with Soviet and Chinese support.

Invading, capturing, and executing - I guess that could come under the broad concept of "stopped supporting"  =D
