Not sure what the troopers are gonna do with it once they catch it...

Not me, has alibis.

I was going to suggest they throw a spike strip across the highway to stop it.
But they got the guy anyhow.

The fun is over: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/06/06/virginia-police-chase-stolen-armored-personnel-carrier-for-more-than-60-miles-soldier-arrested.amp.html
The guy was high. And he is a Lieutenant -- great way to end a career. He had eleven years in -- halfway to retirement. Kiss that goodbye.

11 years in and only a 1st LT? Not much of a career.

Enlisted ->Officer Candidate School-> LT
-
What is the rate of promotion in the National Guard? Was the 11 years in active duty or did that include just NG time?
-
That's a lie.. an M577 can't do medium speed.

29 years old, 11 years in service. Enlisted at 18, probably did a couple or three enlistments as an EM and then went to OCS.

That makes sense. I hope he enjoyed being an officer. And free.

Leave it to a Lieutenant to steal the most fugly, least impressive armored vehicle for his escapade. If you can't snag a tank or a Bradley, why bother? ???
-
Kudos to the maintenance officer and the maintenance team of that unit. 60 miles at 40+mph and it ddidn't throw a track or have a mechanical issue !!!!

Yes, but it was the only operational vehicle on base.

Or remember to pick up a couple boxes of .223 on the way to the base. A few rounds coming out of that thing and he'd have been a hell of a challenge for the cops to figure out.
Realistically, we probably should have something in Federal law specifically permitting/recommending an airstrike to eliminate any stolen military vehicle at the first good opportunity. Imagine if the guy that crunched up several cars with a tank a few years back had been able to swipe even a couple rounds for the main gun too.

Given how many AVs are ending up in local police agency inventories that might be a good law to pass.

For those who can't/won't listen, the song is "Eastbound and Down" by Jerry Reed from "Smokey and the Bandit."
Good fit, I'd say.
