I thought this was a good example of why generally normal people should shoot for laying low in modern America. I guess the "pregporn" thing is a bit of a weird fetish, but everything else they alluded to that changed him from 'Internet hero" to "deplorable" seemed to be centered around subjects all of us here might talk about on any given day. Seems like the thing that really destroyed him was not being a cheerleader for Trayvon Martin.

Remind me never to attend a Presidential Town Hall as a participating member of the audience.

Without really industrial anonymizers the "press" will ferret out the identity of anyone that catches their eye.

Yup. Google still shows posts I made to alt.guns on Usenet from my grad school account 20 freakin' years ago.

What's scary is that I consider everyone on APS an upstanding citizen that I would be proud to call friend and neighbor. Even those with vastly differing opinions to mine. Yet if any of us got "15 minute famous" similar to Bone and the press and bloggers decided to "investigate" us, they would find ways to make us monsters just based on our posts here, let alone any other sites we may visit.

Fortunately I share the same name as a Bank Chairman in Australia, a retired senior US Naval Officer, a US Bank Senior VP, an Architect, and I've got a famous uncle and "cousin" that also help to muddy up the waters of any google search.   Also my "handle" is the same as several other people (on you tube and other places), along with being a type of boat and the whole boy scout thing, that I'm almost invisible on the googles....

Haha--turns out regular guy is actually a regular guy! The horror. The horror.

The only problem with this revelation is I accidentally clicked on a Gizmodo link.

The NY Times story about him at least acknowledged the hypocrisy of stones and glass houses.

I wonder if Internet culture will ever catch up to the reality of the Internet? The availability of information should make people more careful about tut-tutting behavior that's very obviously very common. I doubt it though. I don't think Reddit hates him, though. The only people that are currently hating him are the perpetually outraged crowd who hates everyone.

That said, the guy was an idiot for not using a clean account in that AMA.

Yeah, I should have used "pergpron"  and let Google figure it out... as it usually does correctly.
