Explosion of USS Mount Hood, November 10, 1944

One of those historical events that I had never heard of.
Quote
The ammunition ship USS Mount Hood was responsible for supplying ammunition to hundreds of ships from the United States Third Fleet in Seeadler Harbor.  On November 10, 1944, something went terribly wrong. The History Guy tells a forgotten story that reminds us even the sailors on support vessels risked their lives in the World War II effort.

He said in the video this was the 2nd largest US Navy Base disaster behind the Pearl Harbor attack.
The description of the damage and casualties of the one ship that was 350 yards away was surprising.

IIRC,  the old tv series JAG did an episode in which this event was covered.

I'm told that the Merchant Marine was the most dangerous arm of the military.  I suppose one could argue back and forth about that, but let's face it, if you were on a supply ship, you were automatically a juicy target, both at sea and in port.

And a large portion of the "supplies" were high explosives.

I made acqaintace with a WWII Merchant Mariner in our building whose ship ran supplies to the Aleutians --a dangerous bit of geography in the first place.  The Aleutians were one of the places where the Japs actually established garrisons on U.S. Territory.

And the Mount Hood happened only a few months after the Port Chicago disaster, which was also notable for the subsequent mutiny, one of several such in WW II involving African-American servicemembers.
