Okay so the future Mrs Charby said she wanted a reading at our wedding this fall and wanted my Uncle to deliver it. I asked her would it be okay if it wasn't from the Bible and pick something from literature instead. She said great, so now I am in search of something five minutes or less in length or less. I asked not to do the Biblical route because she isn't religious and my favorite Bible verses are not wedding related.

Were getting married in a restored 19th century barn in the height of the fall color season. The barn in located in a old Utopian society called the Amana Colonies.

So any ideas on what to use?  I'm searching and thinking and can't come up with anything. Uncle found some cool stuff by Plato not sure how she would feel about Greek mythology. I like Dickens, Verne, Poe and Hawthorne.  Hmm my the wedding needs a little Edgar Allen Poe!

Charby,

Congratulations, and best wishes to you both for a long and happy life together.

A wedding is a very personal thing.  I don't know you or your intended, and I would not presume to suggest things for you to have read at your wedding.  But there are dozens of books of what other people have found appropriate- just search "wedding readings" on your favorite search engine, you should get hundreds or thousands of hits.  Find something that makes you both happy, and use it.

There is a lot less formality in some weddings today than there has been in times gone by.  You can set your own 'convention' to suit yourself in a lot of cases.  For instance, my wife and I were married in the very large, newly constructed activities room of the CCRF (continuous care retirement facility) where one of her beloved elderly relatives lives.  This enabled not only my wife's relative but all of that relative's friends to attend, not to mention everyone else in teh facility who was able.  The event provided a huge boost in morale and happiness to the folks there- so much so that the staff noticed and commented on it.  My wife also decided not to spend money on flowers and decorations for the ceremony- instead, every single person who attended got a flower pinned on by one of our neices.  We go back every year on our anniversary and are greeted with enthusiasm, though sadly some of the people who were happiest at the event are no longer with us.  We have since learned that some facilities encourage or even 'stage' weddings just to improve morale among their populations.

Regards,

The relevant divorce statutes for your state?

No, seriously.  How about the section in Plato's Republic where he talks about how Man was originally both male and female but got split and since then the two halves run around trying to find each other.

I've always thought that Geisel's "Green Eggs and Ham" covered a great many occasions.

For my wedding, I used the bible verse that corresponds to "Turn Turn Turn" (To everything there is a season and a time and a purpose unto heaven).

This could be a bad omen however.  The time to get divorced came about 4 years later...

How about...

"Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved."

Or, perhaps...

"But love, first learned in a lady's eyes,
Lives not alone immured in the brain;
But, with the motion of all elements,
Courses as swift as thought in every power,
And gives to every power a double power,
Above their functions and their offices.
It adds a precious seeing to the eye;
A lover's eyes will gaze an eagle blind;
A lover's ear will hear the lowest sound,
When the suspicious head of theft is stopp'd:
Love's feeling is more soft and sensible
Than are the tender horns of cockl'd snails;
Love's tongue proves dainty Bacchus gross in taste:
For valour, is not Love a Hercules,
Still climbing trees in the Hesperides?
Subtle as Sphinx; as sweet and musical
As bright Apollo's lute, strung with his hair:
And when Love speaks, the voice of all the gods
Makes heaven drowsy with the harmony.
Never durst poet touch a pen to write
Until his ink were temper'd with Love's sighs;
O, then his lines would ravish savage ears
And plant in tyrants mild humility.
From women's eyes this doctrine I derive:
They sparkle still the right Promethean fire;
They are the books, the arts, the academes,
That show, contain and nourish all the world:
Else none at all in ought proves excellent."

Rigoletto?

Esempre misero
Chi a lei saffida,
Chi le confida - mal cauto il cor!
Pur mai non sentesi
Felice appieno
Chi su quel seno - Non liba amor!

The man that is so mad
To trust a woman's heart
Forever must be sad.
But still there is no bliss,
Upon this earth compared
To that of a sweet kiss!

"Poe?"

Actually, I think the Raven could very nicely describe the groom's descent into madness after the ceremony...

I like it. Smiley

Ahhhhhhhhh...

Crud, there's a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne and I just can't remember what it's called...

The Birthmark!

It's a perfect story about a healthy, two directional relationship. :-)

I was in one of those once...  She called me up about a year ago and told me to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and it resembled our relationship.  Of course I told her she could go F herself (I'm a nice guy but she could just push me over the edge and I used much harsher tapestry of words that would have blushed a sailor) and never to call me again, so far so good.

I haven't seen the movie yet and refuse to do so to for obvious reasons.

Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless mind is an incredible film.

Charby,
Since you're getting married, selected readings from C.S. Lewis' "The Problem of Pain"
might be germain.  Tongue

"My Wife Thinks I'm An Idiot" by Mike Greenberg

uhh, sorry was listening to ESPN on the way into work this morning.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.
