Modifications and updates to elevators are generally exclusively good things. But the addition of buttons reading "Riot" inside several at a Sacramento state building prompted frightened and confused reactions from employees working there.

As KOVR reported, the workers weren't given a warning as to why the buttons needed to be installed in elevators at the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration Building by the State Department of General Services, which manages the property.

...

Their purpose, as the Department of General Services later outlined, is reportedly to light up to inform riders the elevators will not stop at the first floor in the event of an emergency, like a riot or violent protest. A department spokesperson, however, acknowledged that the term "Riot" may have been confusing, and says they are altering the term on the button.

As expected, some snowflakes are upset at the word "riot".

Sounds like a reasonable precaution, but the powers-that-be could have done a better job of communicating the purpose.

So unlike the fire call button you press to have the FD come help you, it's not to summon a riot?

While the installation of a button reading "Riot" is unusual, an elevator having a "riot mode" is not. The lift feature is meant to bypass lobby or lower floors to prohibit those on the ground level from accessing other parts of the building in the event of civil disturbances.

So are they going to put barricades in the stairwells, too?

At first, I thought it meant the elevators would automatically go down to the basement so employees could get out via the tunnel system.  Or the parking garage.  Or something.

Are SF City employees allowed to smoke pot while on duty?  It sure makes me wonder what goes on in their meeting rooms.

When the button is activated, is there a aural warning?   If not, that would make it a quiet riot.

Your average rioter would likely never consider using the stairs.

Well, duh.  It is a fatal funnel.  I am sure the average rioter knows this.  ;/

I'm absolutely shocked by this.

I had no idea California's government had the ability to plan ahead for the foreseeable consequences of their failing state.

A lot of buildings won't let you open doors out of the stairwell except at specific floors (1st) unless you have a key or access badge for security reasons.

makattak wisecracked,

"I had no idea California's government had the ability to plan ahead for the foreseeable consequences of their failing state."

A very interesting point.

Shouldn't there be buttons for plague, locusts, fire, Amway sales people, cross-dimensional vortexes, and bad BBQ?

Considering the fact it's California I'm surprised they don't have a MAGA panic button.

They do.  They've been pressing it since 2016.

Since the seas are supposed to rise, can't they just rename the "RIOT" button to keep it from stopping on the first floor?  I guess the basement or parking garage needs to be locked out also if they have one.

.....That is also confusing since someone predicted the Great Lakes would dry up at the same time.

My first thought was those weren't "political" things.  But then I remembered that hyperlibs and Communists figure that anything,  anything at all, which tends to disrupt or stress the current system is a good thing to them.

Because Communism / socialism thrives on stressed political systems.

At the French Consulate, the bottom four buttons are labeled Run, Hide, Surrender, and Collaborate.
