Taking pictures of a crime scene?
« on: December 18, 2010, 03:59:06 PM »
Had a little excitement in the neighborhood today. Evidently three kids stole and rolled a Jeep Cherokee at the end of my street. Two were taken away by ambulance, and the third escaped on foot. I went outside to see what why an ambulance, three cruisers, and a wrecker were doing by my house. I asked an officer what happened. He told me what happened and told me I can't take pictures. I explained that I didn't have a camera and asked why I can't take pictures. He told me that this was a crime scene and my camera and pics would have to be confiscated. I didn't want to make a scene, so I thanked him, left the scene, and watched the cleanup from my porch.

Is this correct? Or is this officer misinformed? Is it really illegal to take pics of an accident scene?

Short answer: He's full of s***. So long as you are not in the way and are on public property, your property, or property that you have premission to be on and aren't getting in the way, and there are no local ordinances or laws prohibiting it, they've got no power over that. Not that certain figures of authoritah "get it"...read this http://www.krages.com/ThePhotographersRight.pdf

It's the new Government "Wiki" policy.  Nothing can be seen, heard, copied (in any form) or passed on to another human being.

He's full of doo-doo.  It's an 'authoritay' thing on his part.  Were you to press it, however, you might even be arrested. And there would be considerable time and expense to you to get clear of the charges.
It's happened to others, and there have been threads touching on the subject here at APS.

If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Slightly scary, very disheartening ... but hardly surprising. There's a lot of "It's illegal because I SAY it's illegal" out there.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
