Fistful, I do indeed give Internet Heroes much credit.

I myself have Walter Mitty aspirations, but am sadly restrained by my own limitations. Wink

Bottom line?  It's a Concealed Weapons Permit.  It's neither a Caped Crusader Justice Issuance Badge, nor is it a Wallet-Infused Backside Hero Viagra Patch.  It's not a commission or general order to procure a Tactical Wheelbarrow, or even a license to dole out vigilante justice.

It's just a Concealed Weapons Permit - all hero aspirations aside.

In the event of a real, Honest-to-Gawd shooting incident, it won't prevent one from hearing one's own heartbeat in their ears, and it may not even prevent one's bowel contents from resettling in their undergarments.  It also won't remind you that you're outgunned, and that it's probably better to duck behind the available cover of a building or automobile vs. sitting there and counting Garand rounds, waiting for the Blessed Ping.  (Assuming the shooter doesn't do the old WWII trick of throwing an empty en-bloc clip on the ground, etc.)

In the military, we called it Advance to the Rear.  That covers the stigma of saying "Retreat".  Another way of looking at is is the old adage, "He who fights then runs away, lives to fight another day!"   I'll use cover, then decide whether or not I should engage or simply save my bacon.  I don't want Chris to inherit my 696 if I can avoid it.

There's a former USAF Security Policeman who neutralized an AK shooter at Fairchild AFB using his issued Beretta M9, from over 70 yards away.  Two of his four shots hit the gunman.  This was a trained and motivated SP, and his gun-fu was exceptionally strong that day.

This thread sounds so much like similar ones on THR, where everybody's James Bond with a License to Kill. Those threads don't last long over there, and I'd really like to say this one could survive if we inject a little common sense into it.

I think you're reading way too much into this, and overreacting.  If you find yourself in a parking lot with a madman shooting at everything and everyone, there's nothing wrong, unreasonable, or "heroish" about shooting back to defend yourself.  Pretending that we're simply playing Caped Crusader or James Bond just because we're willing to defend ourselves with our carry pieces is just plain silly (to put it politely).

Trying to outrun a Garand is a dubious and dangerous proposition.  As bluestar says, most clubs and parking lots I've seen don't really make a quick escape possible.  Now if circumstances really make it safer to flee, you should certainly do so.  But I wouldn't count on that.  My life is too  important to me.

i don't play being caped crusader. and i believe that you have just insulted me and anyone else who determined that in a life threating situation they would shoot in defense. its not about playing james bond and it never was. its about saving your bacon.

If someone shoots at me with an M1 Garand from across a parking lot, I know exactly what I'd do......

....I'd hit the dirt.....voluntarily or involuntarily.....

...anything after that is pure speculation....

Nope, and I never said there was anything wrong about shooting back in defense. "Reading into it?" I've slung no insults, just a stern admonition to fellow CCW holders to think very carefully about bringing a knife to a gun fight, pistol to a rifle fight, etc. Now, granted, we're all deadeye shooters, tactically well-versed, and bullet-proof to boot - at least on the Internet. Courses like LFI do a very good job reminding folks how things go down, and what your responsibilities are.  Saving your bacon is indeed paramount, but don't overlook the forest for the trees just because you have that slip of paper in your wallet.

I will reiterate, however, If Plan A involves sitting around counting M1 Garand shots and waiting for the Blessed Ping, I'd heartily recommend that one has a Plan B ready to go. Wink

Well, if he'd just had the foresight to join the Minneapolis PD first, he'd have gotten a medal instead.

Ya know, Gewehr, I pretty much agree with you.  But the repeated reminders of your training with LFI/Ayoob, it's name-dropping.  Not that I don't respect the name, the school, your opinion, etc.  I'm sure we all do, but...
