Prison threat for pensioner who put sand back on beach
« on: March 09, 2007, 06:01:30 AM »
Here's a snip from the article, read the entire thing, it's astonishing really.

A pensioner has been threatened with prison or a £50,000 fine if he takes windblown sand back to the beach where it came from.

Arthur Bulmers seafront garden became carpeted after a week of storms swept tons of sand from the beach across the road.

It seemed like common sense to shovel it into his wheelbarrow and take it back, load by load, to its rightful place.

""The sand is actually part of the Queens Crown estate, which owns most of the foreshore around our coasts," he said."

Given that, I'm surprised the council isn't charging homeowners for theft of Crown property.

Unbelievably retarded, especially the part about the council scooping the sand off roads and putting it back on the beach.

Perhaps Mr. Bulmer could lodge a charge against the Crown for littering.

Doubt it would stick.  Sovereign Immunity and all that rot...

Still, it's an appealing thought.

From the context it appears that "fly tipping" is the veddy British way of saying littering. Am I correct?

I took it to mean illegal dumping, in bulk.  Something more than dropping a cigarette butt on the ground.

Why not just dump it back onto the road?
Then he is not "fly-tipping" on the beach and its the cities job to clean it up.

Did you read the comments?  No sympathy for the Council at all.

I like this guys sense of humor...

Perhaps he could surreptitiously take the sand back to the beach with two cloth bags filled with sand, hidden inside his trousers? Pull out the pins and kick the garden sand in with the beach sand - the goons'll never spot it.

It was only a matter of time before the assault wheelbarrow was used in the comission of a crime.

Sorry, carebear.  If that's a movie, I've never seen it.  I don't know what the guy is getting at.

Dude -- drop what you're doing and go rent it now. You're not allowed back on APS until after you've seen it.  Smiley

"The Great Escape"?

Steve McQueen as "The Cooler King"?

"Big X"?

"Danny the Tunnel King"?

It's a fantastic movie.  A classic war film, POW camp film, "heist" (the escape) film, buddy picture, cast of giants.  Great visuals and score and is referenced consciously and unconsciously by many films thereafter.

You owe it to yourself to rent it.  It's a great film.

Apology conditionally accepted provided you rent the film and love it as much as we do.

Barring that, you're in limbo, heathen.

The Great Escape... Charles Bronson was Danny the Tunnel King which is interesting because in his younger days Mr. Bronson worked in coal mines and hated being underground. James Garner's character... in real life the fighter pilot was captured in North Africa after bailing out and wandering into German lines.

Steve McQueen rode motorcycles in real life. He rode harder than the guys they had playing the German motorcyclists... they couldn't keep up with him. So, Steve McQueen filmed his part of the chase scene, then put on a German uniform and filmed that part. So what you see is Steve McQueen chasing Steve McQueen. grin When Robert Osborn told that on TCM I thought it was pretty good.
