Time for another letter to the editor
« on: August 02, 2011, 11:23:29 PM »
Uh, Bedlamite, this guy's from your area. I hold you responsible. ;)

Yes, Mr. Griffith, families borrow money to buy cars, etc. However, a family doesn't borrow 40 cents of every dollar it makes, unlike a certain government in DC I know of. Besides, if borrowing helps our economy grow, why don't we borrow $100 trillion and really get the economy zooming?

Quote
BUDGET

Borrowing helps economy grow

A balanced-budget amendment has appeal to many people. They may say "my family lives within its budget and we don't spend money we don't have, so the government should live within its budget, too." The Journal Sentinel staff editorial pointed out that "the nation's finances are not comparable to a household."

Neither one of those statements is completely true. For example, if you have ever taken out a loan for a car or you have a mortgage, you have spent money you don't have. Borrowing is what helps people afford things they otherwise don't have enough cash for. It is a standard part of the world's economic system for families, corporations and governments - it helps economies grow and helps the average person to be able to become middle class.

It is what helped the United States' economy pull out of the complete nose-dive two years ago and stave off a depression. This is why moderate Republicans, Sen. John McCain and others have tried to talk sense to those tea party members who are promoting a balanced-budget amendment - an amendment that would make it illegal for the U.S. to ever borrow again.

Maybe we can find him an engaging hobby that does not include reading newspapers.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

If you know what the thread is going to be about (which you should) why do you read it?

Oh, and I had an engaging hobby years ago. Now, with the price of those little blue pills, it's a bit expensive (not to mention the cost of getting a twenty-something to play with).

It's not the cost of the 20-something that kills you.  It's the lawyers you have to hire when the 50-something you made that promise to all those years ago finds out about the 20-something.

Better yet.....cut off his supply of toilet paper....that way, he'll find a better use for the editorial page than posting it here....  ;/
Impressed yet befogged, they grasped at his vivid leading phrases, seeing only their surface meaning, and missing the deeper current of his thought.

If you know that the letters are going to make us crazy (which you should) why do you post them? You must be familiar with the works of Shan Yu.

Yes, Dick why don't you got get the Firefly complete DVD set at the local Mega-Mart or Netflix it?

You'll find it much, much more enjoyable then the LTE of the Milwaukee and Alabama birdcage liners.

What the feral govt is doing is more comparable to borrowing money to go out on a drunken binge with hookers, except less worthwhile and respectable.

Actually, what the government is doing is comparable to taking the credit cards of everyone in the neighborhood, maxing them out, then holding a gun to everyone and ordering them to get more credit cards, then maxing those out, then getting more, and on and on. The government will never have to pay off the credit cards, as there's nobody that's "the government". It's the neighborhood folks who'll have to pay.

That is an interesting analogy, Dick.  And painfully accurate.

The government keeps maxing out the credit cards, and the rubes keep on voting for more of the same. Anything less than all-out spending would be draconian, or so I'm told. BTW, anyone else notice how the mainstream press now repeatedly uses the term "revenue" rather than "taxes" whenever they are discussing solutions to our debt crisis?

It's Xiang Yu, not Shan Yu.

And while the bible is somewhat specific about the subject of killing, it is a little fuzzy on the subject of kneecaps.
