Need to See Around That Semi?
« on: June 23, 2015, 10:31:36 AM »
Samsung is toying with video displays on the back of semis so drivers can see in front of the truck. On the face of it, neat idea. I have to wonder though, if it will overly embolden people to do things like pass the truck in dangerous locations because they can "see" oncoming traffic that, as my rearview mirror states, "may be closer than it appears". I can see it being a good idea for, as the article mentions, anticipating the need to brake, etc.

I see it as a distraction.  And I wonder what happens at night.

Who is going to pay for mounting all this on thousands of tractor trailers?  People make a living doing that, but I wouldn't call it high profit.

I see it as a distraction.

I think it would be for me. I'm still not used to the backup camera on my 4Runner. While I find the gridlines very useful to get within inches of obstacles in a tight spot, the actual "picture" is distracting to me, and if I find during "normal" backing up situations, I prefer to just use the mirrors and turn my head when needed.

The dislpays get installed for "safety" probably with a .gov mandate and tax money. The, once everything is in place, Samsung starts selling ad time.

Hmmm...a display that shows what one would see if the object the display is mounted on wasn't there...they call that "active camouflage" in all the sci fi books.

Yep - distraction.  There are times it would be nice, those times are limited to narrow and curvy 2 lane highways.  The times they would be helpful I think do not outweigh harm of the distraction and the advertising use that would surely follow.

I don't think this is a good idea. It will only embolden idiots to pass when they should not.

The one thing I'd really like to see through large vehicles is the traffic light so I can tell if it's changed in the time the student driver has used to stall the truck twice trying to get through the left turn.  The problem there would be that sometime after the first stall, the front of the truck is pointed off to the left, away from the light.

Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Nothing short of a lynching with cluebats could help people who do that.

No, but the driver of the car behind the truck with the dash cam would have crapped his pants.

I'd say she's probably exceeded that level

No, but the driver of the car behind the truck with the dash cam would have crapped his pants.

Assuming they're not tailgating, they probably saw(and heard) it anyways.

There are active projects to replace rearview mirrors with cameras.  But that is more to do with reducing drag to improve fuel economy.  I doubt any truck would install the system in the OP unless legally mandated.

Do those rear view cameras flip the image so it looks like a mirror ???

Could be awful confusing to those who have been driving for a long time.

What about security?  What if someone inserts their own feed to the screen?

Maybe a clear view when there's traffic.  Or, something completely different.

Not sure, but they can make so that Objects are not closer than they appear.  Or make it so the mistaken movie version of that is actually correct.
