Member groups - suggestions wanted, please
« on: October 28, 2006, 02:44:35 PM »
Folks, at the moment the forum software is set up for the following groups:

Newbie - 0 posts
Jr. Member - 50 posts
Full Member - 100 posts
Sr. Member - 250 posts
Hero Member - 500 posts

I think that some of these need to change.  I intensely dislike "Hero Member", and I think some new members might be a bit insulted to be referred to as a "Newbie".  So, please post here with your suggested membership categories.  Keep 'em clean! Cheesy

My own contribution:

Jr. Member - 0 to 99 posts
Member - 100 to 249 posts
Sr. Member - 250 to 500 posts
Blabbermouth - 500+ posts.

What say you?

A simple "New member" in place of "Newbie" would sound better in my opinion.

I am not sure I can take seriously any concern over post counts and the titles assigned to them.  I vote NOTA:  none of the above.  Actually, I vote NONE.  Please consider abolishing the process altogether.

Oooohhh! I just discovered the spell checker!  Neat!!!!!

Edit:  oops!  That spell check function appears to be in Firefox 2.0.  Still neat.

101-500 member

501-1000 addict

1001-2500 post whore

2501+ look at me, I am posting again

I personally do not care for Member status, Post counts, Stars  Avatars, or even join dates.  If there is an option for a member to deselect these for themselves, I vote to activate this feature.

When I log in as a Staff (elsewhere) My username  presence is the same as everyone else, not bold, not in italic, or different color. Just in real small letters, underneath is "Staff".

That said, I like simple, and I do not like for members to feel intimated. Many folks have been members for a long time, lurk a lot, and when they do share, one is often wise to pay attention. I use :

Member 0-15
Jr.Member 16-30
Sr.Member 31 and above

sm,

Adjust your profile.  You see avatars and signatures by choice, active or passive.

Yes, I am aware of this.

Of course right now I cannot adjust anything and Derek is looking into the reason.

On some forums -I drew short straw and was put on Staff [I was not present at these meetings you understand] some of the features I mentioned above are Optional. Heck we even had it set to show "Member" only, and another by the 5th post, one was a "Sr. Member.

One one, if folks wanted to use avatars and whatever, fine, it was interesting , nobody did.

Whatever folks want to do, is fine by me.  I'm easy. Not been around much, not sure how often I will be in the future, actually just logged in to see about those problems I was having anyway.

Ya'll be good.

I'd vote for some of the more tongue-in-cheek classes listed by others.  It would inject some humor, show we don't take the subject too seriously.
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Another vote for the "less than serious" classifications bases on number of posts.

I like the post count.  I'm not sure I care one way or the other about signifying special name or avatars.  My reasoning on the post count is that since we are a self moderating board, if a thread starts to get a bit testy or off topic to the point it's drifted in another direction, perhaps a senior member, shown by the # of posts, might have a little credibility in asking posters to get back on topic or turning the heat down a bit.  Just my .02¢.

Or not. I *may* have a touch of OCD, and if someone thinks they can direct me because they have a larger number of posts, I will intentionally irritate them for my own perverse pleasure. Perhaps instead of assigning importance to the # of post counts, they should be done away with all together. I don't care if a person has 1 post or 12,412 posts, they are a member here and as such should be treated as one. Assigning "labels" is assinine. Just by virtue of finding and signing up for this forum should give a person credibility. They can can then build on (or tear down) that credibility from post #1. It won't take long for them to figure out whether or not this is the place for them, and it sure won't take long for the other members to figure out whether or not he is an asshat.

So, Peter is asking for suggestions regarding a rather innane subject, but interesting nonetheless, and its interesting the humor that popped up in the replies.  Then Bob chimes in with a nobody is gonna tell me what to do comment and follows it up with a rather juvenile threat about continually tormenting anyone one who has the temerity to make a suggestion to him.

Sheesh!  I guess I don't have any reasonable reply to Bob's rather bellicose maundering.

Well, I've had a few e-mails and PM's with suggestions.  I've culled the less-than-printable ones, and the following have me amused.  What do you think?

New member - up to 50 posts.
Member - 50 to 250 posts.
Senior member - 250 to 500 posts.
Blabbermouth - 500 to 1,000 posts.
Verbal diarrhea - 1,000 to 2,500 posts.
Crusty old fart - over 2,500 posts.

Well, the wee problem is I'm still in the "Blabbermouth" category. Tongue

And I think I'd have trouble envisioning fistful as a "crusty old fart," but I think I'd get used to it.  shocked  grin

Preacherman , You had me right up to "crusty old fart" , I'd rather you stayed with the "talks too much" theme set by blabbermouth and verbal diarrhea. Maybe "cyber windbag" grin

I'm a minimalist.

How about:

Member.

If we really need to distinguish, I'd go with:

Jr. Member.
Member.
Sr. Member.

Or maybe something gun related?

Single shot.
Revolver.
Full auto. Smiley

I like the idea of:

Senior Member

I'd also be fine with torching the whole thing.  Post count isn't indicative of relative worth or post quality.

I don't see the need for any differentiation based on post count.  In my humble opinion, all that does is encourage folks to run off at the mouth, so to speak.
Why don't you make a distinction based on the number of posts that are mature, make sense, and contribute something?  You could subtract numbers for posts that were argumentative, abusive, abrassive and mean spirited........oh, and posts that were just plain stupid.

I'm no fan of the post counter.  Looking at the number of posts I've made here makes me feel like I have no life.  I don't know how fistful lives with himself.

Kill the post counter.  Do it for the children and their delicate self-esteems.
