I have somehow picked up some small, light scratches on the stainless steel fridge, and vent hood over the range. I thought I had read somewhere that stainless kitchen appliances are often coated with a clear coat over the brushed finish. If this is correct, any ideas as to how to repair the scratches without making an unsightly mess of the clear coat or a shiny spot on the brushed finish? I wonder if the 'scratch doctor' liquid that I use on the cars would be on point here. I have used the gray Scotchbrite pads on my Ruger brushed stainless handguns to remove scratches.

Seriously though, you'll need to know for sure if it's coated, that'll make a difference in how you fix it. You can either try some light "designed for paint" polish (I'd use car stuff) and see if it works, or find an out-of-view spot to hit with some abrasive and see if there's a clear coat.

Shine it out until the brushed finish is gone and go for a mirror polish on everything.

Yes, test out of sight and if it is not coated use the scotchbrite with water or Windex and buff in straight lines with the grain direction of the metal.
