I am working on putting together a rifle that is a fairly heavy .308 bolt action built with an eye towards accuracy. I picked up a heavy barrel for it cheap a while ago, but it turned out to be threaded and so I need to put something on the end.  I'd love a can, but it ain't happening in this state. I can just stick a thread protector on there until I figure it out, too, but what fun is that? A flash hider seems kinda unnecessary. So, it's a muzzle brake.

What should I look for in a brake? Any recommendations? Assuming the materials are the same, are high priced ones that much better than cheap ones?

Price is not necessarily an indication of quality, but the good stuff costs more.

If you ever plan to move to a state that allows suppressors, get a brake that can mount a suppressor.  Otherwise, most any good quality brake will do.  There are plenty of opinions at SnipersHide.com.

For the rifles I shoot, I don't need them.  I only shoot 5.56 and .308, so a brake isn't really necessary to control recoil. Also, the brakes increase noise to the shooter and everyone nearby. They also increase dust clouds when shooting from prone. And finally, shooting a rifle with a brake in an enclosed room or near a wall just plane sucks.

I'll give you increased noise for others and not needed for a 308, but with well designed brakes, the noise for the shooter is reduced and you can eliminate the dust (my 338 brake is directed sideways but upward for this exact reason).  But you are correct,they hve their disadvantages, and are really unnecessary on 5.56 and 308.

If you're going for accuracy why not use the threads to install a tuneable damper (aka the BOSS system)?

I've got a 7.62 Troy Claymore on one of my 6.8spc AR15 uppers. Some have called it ugly, but it works as advertized.

I used to think the same thing on lighter recoil calibers, but it is sure nice to pull the trigger and watch yout target get hit through the scope. I can even see an practical use if you are a varmit hunter.

I do that now with my ARs. I am almost there with my Savage .308. I'm still refining my body position to manage the recoil. I was able to see my hit at 1,000 yards last month. The extended flight time allowed me to get back on target in time. I saw the trace on that shot, too. That was cool.

When George Vais was still here in country, I bought and installed his muzzle brakes.  Just wish I'd bought more of 'em.
