Another vote here for the plug-in oil filled radiators.  I've used them several times over the years and they're both effective and safe.  It takes a little bit for them to warm up, but once they do they can put off quite a bit of heat without the problem of an exposed element that can set stuff on fire.

And another vote. I picked one up at Costco 9 or so years ago and it still works great.
