Some sort of audio recording thingy
« on: July 30, 2013, 12:57:47 PM »
This sort of relates to the multitracker thread, but I thought I'd ask a separate question, since this is a much more limited issue.

I have a need to record from a tape deck to a PC. For this, I need to have something to plug that tape deck into. A USB dongle of some sort would be nice, so that I am not limited to the one machine I will be doing this with right now.

I know there are various options at various price points. What's a relatively inexpensive one that works well? Also, do these things typically require an amp, or can I just use the tape deck's line out jacks?

What type of outputs on the tape deck?

RCA jacks. It's an 80's or 90's component deck.

$7.99 gets you a set of L/R RCA cables to 1/8" stereo male plug.

Plug that into the mic or line-in input on your laptop.

Start up Sound Recorder and record to WAV and then use WinLame to convert to MP3.

I bought something like what you want for connecting a phonograph to the USB port of a computer and making MP3's.  It's an external sound card with a built-in RIAA preamp.  But it also has line-level inputs.  IIRC it cost about $30 from either Amazon or B&H.

Don't ask me how well it works, I haven't found the time to use it
