I still just have a hard time believing anyone would kill, attempt to steal or even pay good money for ugly basketball shoes...
But that's just me.

Anyhoo, I have given up on trying to wrap my head around how people honestly believe these "good boys that are turning their lives around" didn't get what was coming. The lot of 'em are Darwin awards.
The actual good boys who've turned their lives around don't do dumb *expletive deleted*it that can get you killed.

Perhaps I'm reading in a biased manner, but this quote from one of the pastors almost makes it sound like maybe the victim should have just given up the property he legally purchased and possessed, because the assailant didn't have them. Don't they teach, "Thou shalt not steal" (especially via the barrel of a gun)  in church anymore?

I don't know that you have to read his words that way, at all. Robbing someone at gunpoint, just so you can have shoes that are fancier than the ones you already have, could be considered materialistic. So the kid's materialism caused him to put others' lives in danger, and then led to his death.

Getting back to the OP, sounds like SumDuud and NotherGuy failed at the victim selection process.

But yes, I also fail to understand the mind set that if I am wearing "fresh" items with lots of "bling" on my and "spinners" on my car that it shows to the other members of my tribe that I have money, when really I don't because I spent it all on this crap to try to impress you.

I believe the actual term is:
Catastrophic failure of the victim selection process.

I wonder how soon we'll see riots over this event...
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

Scout, you've never heard of 'keeping up with the neighbors'?  The specific totems might change, but there's plenty of middle class white people living on credit to appear richer than they are.

Middle class people will usually keep up by having nice homes. In the ghetto, that's not possible. So, keeping up means having some bling that's more portable, such as wheels or clothing. If it weren't possible for some middle class folks to have more house than they could afford, we'd probably see more white people wearing two-pound gold medallions around their necks, or putting spinners on their Land Rovers.

You make a good point, but I think it's more that higher class types tend to be more subtle.  Less bling, IE 'lots of gold', and a few 'high quality' diamonds.  As you say, the poor can't be 'house proud', so they compensate in other ways.  Poor people go for fancy rims, 'higher class' people go for fancy cars.  People from the slums who 'make it', such as sports stars and musicians, will go for both.

Bullshit he put himself in that position not society.

Correct.

The story in the second link really has the spin doctors in high gear. Sheesh. 16 years old, a high school sophomore, already involved in multiple instances of criminal activity, and everyone is shocked -- SHOCKED! -- that he "got involved" in something like this.

BS indeed.

Quote
Jawaad moved to the Middletown City Schools District from Columbus earlier this school year, and was a sophomore on the football team, school officials said. Earlier this year, he was charged with petty theft for allegedly stealing Pop Tarts, two plates of fried chicken, a Snickers bar and a plate of sushi from Kroger, 3420 Towne Blvd., according to Middletown police reports obtained by this newspaper. Two other juveniles and MHS football players were charged with petty theft, according to police reports.

Sounds like a high school with a football team that has a "corporate culture" problem. Shame on the coaches for not teaching their players to behave like human beings.

Quote
Jawaad also was charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly punching a Hamilton High School student at a basketball game, and he was in possession of a “small baggie of marijuana,” while at school, according to police reports.

In other words, at 16 he was already a multiple offender.

Quote
The Rev. Michael Bailey, pastor at Faith United Church and linkage coordinator at MHS, said Jawaad has been suspended at least twice for his actions. Bailey said he was “blown away” when he heard Jawaad, a soft-spoken student, was allegedly involved in an attempted robbery over a pair of tennis shoes.

“How did I miss this?” Bailey asked. “I never saw this coming.”

He said losing a life over a pair of shoes shows how materialistic our society has become.

“It’s like, ‘I got mine. What about you?’” Bailey said.

I can't be sure if the good reverend is criticizing the punk for getting himself killed over a pair of shoes, or if he's criticizing the shooter for defending himself against an armed assault. I hope it's the former because, if it's the latter, there's a man who has no business being a pastor.

Quote
Ladonna Matthers, one of Jawaad’s cousin, spoke with his father about the deadly shooting.

“He’s very heartbroken; it’s tragic,” said Matthers, who said Wallace Jabbar was out of town working on Monday. “This is very unfortunate. He’s very polite and well mannered, he likes video games…a good kid. Unfortunately, he got caught up in something that ended his life.

No, dear, he didn't "get caught up in something." He made a conscious decision to become an armed robber. Actions have consequences.

Quote
Matthers said she never knew Jawaad was involved in criminal incidents.

There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Quote
“Very surprised to hear about this,” said Matthers. “Regardless like I said of anybody’s past or anything he’s a 16-year-old child.”

A 16-year old who indulged in committing adult crimes. You can't just write off a criminal history with “Regardless like I said of anybody’s past or anything ..."

Random thought:  did Jar-Jar consider that the Air Jordans owned by his intended victim might not be the right size?

He did not have to worry; he was planning to trade with someone who stole the size he needed.

Interesting.  In the video, Mr. Chisholm mentioned that the mall has a "no guns" policy, even for legal CCW holders.

Good thing for the intended victim that he chose not to obey that policy.

Incorrect, citizen. Had the murderer obeyed the policy, then this promising young man would be alive today, and wealth would have been redistributed to the less fortunate.

But it appears to have been the right person and not over tennis shoes but over armed robbery.

Inherent in the armed robber's "Your money or your life" is "Your money or my life."  I have no problem with that.
