Who here is going to Estrella War?
« on: February 03, 2007, 09:38:13 AM »
I will be there again this year. I'll be camping with the Barony of al-Barran, Kingdom of the Outlands. I will also be working at Chirurgeon's Point and doing battlefield Chirurgery.

Ask for Lord Sean MacRuaidhri O'Ceallachain. (Shawn MacRory O'Callahan for the Gaelic impaired)

Sounds like a Ren Faire

That sounds like fun. We have a big one here in North Texas, but I haven't been yet.

Big SCA thing, looks like more fun than just a Ren Faire.  Massed battles?  Verily that rocketh.

Last I heard of SCA people was one of them that got into a road rage incident here.

They got out, got their sword out, yelled at the other driver that they "ought to run them through", and then used the sword to pop their tire before being arrested by the cops. Wisely, they dropped the sword at gunpoint.

Got a bit of chuckles on the news...

But some people take it seriously but sanely.  Accurate costumes, study real fighting techniques, that sort of thing.

In some of those battles they can actually shoot arrows at each other.  You don't see that at WWII reenctments.

The "arrows" used are golf tubes with padded points. We're not THAT crazy.

As for the guy flatening tires with a sword, do you have a link to anything that specificlly say he was a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism? Or that is wasn't just a bit on Reno 911? He was more likely some LARP/RPG nut with a loose screw.

I talked to a guy some years ago who did that sort of thing.  He showed me a video of some of the mock combat.  It was pretty cool and about as realistic as you can get without killing people.
It would be interesting to get into it and learn a little about it, but it really looked like a full time hobby.  I have other hobbies I am not willing to give up.

Why wouldn't they?  That's a good time.

Much more fun than actually trading rifle fire anyway.  grin

I've noticed you don't see many World War ONE re-enactments. I wonder why that is?

Though I guess people peeking at each other from muddy trench lines and occasionally choking each other with simulated gas shells wouldn't be so much fun.

Plus I can see the scenarios:

"Okay, everyone, all the hundred plus lot of you, jump out of the trench and run towards the guy with the machine gun. He'll fire full-auto, and ALL of you fall down...

grin

I think it is just because no one is really all that interested in the art of trench digging as a hobby.  Smiley

Actually, there IS quite a bit of WWI reenacting. Here are a few links to get you started:

SMLE, you are contributing to the delinquency of military history nerds.  Don't you care about the lives you ruin or the families you tear apart?

 cheesy

Does anyone know why it's called Estrella War?  Seems an odd name.  Their website wouldn't tell me.

It used to be held in Estrella Mountain Park, in Arizona.

As for the name, the event was originally held at Estrella Mountain Park on the West side of Phoenix. "Estrella" is also Spanish for "Star" so there is the oblique referance to Star Wars there as well.  rolleyes

Thanks.  The Star Wars allusion is what made me curious.

I'm with SMLE is saying it was more probably a LARPer. Don't get me wrong, I play a lot of DnD and other RPG's, but even amongst hardcore roleplayers LARP has a pretty dodgy reputation.

Thanks for letting me know fistful; guess I need a new sigline.
