Chicago Teacher's Union contract demands...
« on: May 05, 2024, 10:13:28 AM »
What kind of contract do you demand for your members when they're instructors in one of the least proficient school systems in the entire nation?

How about a $50 BILLION contract that includes free abortions for union members, pay hikes of 9% per year for the next 5 years, and accommodation for illegals?

https://www.foxnews.com/us/chicago-teachers-50b-demands-includes-pay-hikes-abortions-migrant-accommodation

Reminds me of the budget that the local school system submitted to the county here about 20 years ago. It was a down time in the local economy, and the county was cutting services. The school chief was told to hold the line on that year's budget.

So, the schools came back with an annual budget demand that was nearly 60% higher than the previous year's...

Is that for 1 year or multiple?
Says the current budget is $9B up from $7.4B just  5 years ago.

No, it's a multi-year contract.

They want $50 billion.

Apparently the entire tax base revenue for Illinois, the entire state, was $50.7 billion last year.

The Chicago school administration is every bit as wretchedly corrupt as the Chicago teacher's union, and has been for many decades. I got to see some of that when I was a high school student at a Chicago public high school back in the '70s.

I very much doubt honesty, integrity, and serving the best interests of students and parents has improved during the intervening years.

How will they handle this? Well, the current mayor of Chicago is a former Chicago teacher's union goon, so if you imagine a terrible outcome . . . you're probably still being an optimist.

But I stopped caring a while back - the people of Chicago know what they want, voted for it, and are now going to get it. Good and hard.

Two decades ago the regional (three towns) high school district serving my town did something like that. The proposed budget was voted down by an overwhelming majority in all three towns, so the school board revised it -- and came back with an even higher proposed budget. We set a state record that still stands -- IIRC, the budget was rejected 17 times before finally passing on the 18th attempt. It showed just how little the members of the board of education cared about what their constituents -- the taxpayers -- thought or wanted. They thought they were just going to wait us out.

What actually happened was that the margin of defeat increased with every failed attempt -- as did the percentage of voter turnout. The following election cycle, some of the incumbent members of the school board declined to run again, and I think several others were voted out.

Something I read about a week ago about this said the teachers want a "housing stipend" despite the fact that many of them are earning OVER $100,000 !!!  [barf]

Relevant to this, I just saw a news segment that said only 21% of Chicago 8th graders are proficient at reading. There was a time when the opposite of that, 21% NOT proficient, was an outrage. Chicago may be ground zero for the idiocracy generation.

The original article I posted mentioned that statistic in passing.

I would really like to see some real journalist ask the head of the Teacher's Union how the hell they justify asking for anything more given their current performance.  Let them justify the pathetic education they are providing.

Snerk!

The answer is obvious! There wasn't enough money thrown at the problem, so you just need to keep throwing increasing amounts of money at the problem!

Spending ~50% more per pupil than the national average just isn't enough!

No, no, no, that's not how any of this works.  If students do well, it's all because how awesome teachers are.  If students do poorly, teachers just can't help it because parents suck.

I'm only being half sarcastic.  Excessive credit taking aside, teachers and other school staff have a relatively small impact on the performance of their students.  They can't significantly impact the amount of support and emphasis on education that happens at home, and without that support they are just not capable of moving the needle on the vast majority of kids.  In areas with a culture that values education, teachers will perform well.  In an area with a culture that does not value education, teachers will perform poorly.

It's pretty similar to police, actually.  In areas with cultures that are self-governing and respect the law, Barney Fife can control a town with minimal effort and few issues.  In other areas ...

In both cases, the ones doing well will hold out their success as a reason to give them more money, and the ones doing poorly will blame their failures on lack of money.

I agree with you there, actually.  Then I'd like them to explain why the taxpayers should spend $50,000,000,000 on something that has a relatively small impact on their students.   >:D

Sure, you and I agree, but I can't imagine getting a teacher's union rep to ever admit that there is any problem not solvable by a massive influx of money into school systems.

They could just play old Sesame Street videos and take turns reading Cat in a Hat and get a higher percentage than that.  That is some pretty strong effort given to fail that hard.

My wife, who taught elementary school for 30 years agrees with you.  In recent years with the dot com boom in the Seattle area, she has been very pleased to see the kids from India or who have Indian parents. She lists that culture as one who places high importance on education and expectations of their kids in terms of academic performance and behavior.  She underlines the part about behavior.

My ex-wife was a high school English teacher. The town she taught in wasn't exactly an inner-city ghetto, but at the same time that town's high school was best known for its football team, not for academic excellence. My ex- was a couple of tiers down in seniority within the English department, so she didn't get (shall we say) the star pupils. One evening she was moaning about how hard it was to get any of her students to read anything, or to write anything.

For reading, I suggested she skip the classics like Wuthering Heights and have her kids read science fiction, such as Edgar Rice Burroughs. His books are written in good English, they're easy to read, and not difficult to follow.

For writing -- on a few occasions she drove my car to work. My car at the time was an autocross-prepped AMC Javelin, i.e. a race car. Most of her male students were gearheads, and most of her female students hung out with the male gearheads. So I suggested that, rather than assign her students to write about something that they didn't care about, she assign the boys to write something automotive. I don't remember what we came up with for the girls, but something related. And the deal was that my ex- wouldn't grade the automotive essays, I would.

The experiment was a success. Kids who didn't know they could write found out that, by golly, they could write. They just needed to be interested in the subject.
