AK-47 at Wounded Knee
« on: March 26, 2010, 06:57:42 PM »

No, it's not a time-travel story.

I was perusing a slideshow at time.com about Mr. Kalashnikov's rifle and came across the photo on this page:

http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1964810_2066258,00.html

Caption says the man is a member of the American Indian Movement at Wounded Knee in 1973.

So how would he get his hands on one at that time?  Black market?  Illicit Vietnam bringback?

(The other photos are interesting too)

"Known for their loose tolerances, the guns have functioned perfectly even after being dug out of mud. As word spread, more than 10 other countries began making unauthorized clones, and the guns started to appear all over the world. This man, a member of the American Indian Movement, waves his AK-47 during the siege of Wounded Knee."

Fixed it for them.

I knew a guy that had a knockoff and he said the barrel doesn't last all that long.

I believe the design has generous clearances, but tolerances are not particularly loose.

My favorite:

"Bucharest, Romania, 1989
In an example of acute historical irony, this anticommunist civilian uses an AK-47 to hunt down secret police during the overthrow of Nicolae Ceausescu, Romania's oppressive communist dictator."

"Hang a dictator, hunt down his minions and kill them like rats"

The lack of that ^^^ in most post-commie countries is what went wrong with the end of the Cold War.  If it had, Putin would be food for worms...along with many other deserving creatures.

You want to be angry? How about the fact the West deliberately worked to prevent a Nurenberg-type trial for Communist leadership?

Would not surprise me in the least.

Are you familiar with Vladimir Bukovsky? At one point in his work, he worked to assist the Yeltsin administration in gathering information for such a trial. He says that various Western diplomats did their best to prevent such a thing from happening.

He tells about this here.

Hmmm.  Hope that's not us in 20 years.
