Wake County Residents...Questions

My wife and I are moving to NC from Florida next year to be near her family.  We are moving to the Raleigh area.  My SIL lives in Cary but I have this impression that Cary is a lot like the town I grew up in (Plano, TX) which is Snobby Soccer Mom central and not what I want at all.  Considerations thus far based on feedback from SIL and BIL are Apex, Holly Springs, and Wake Forest.  We were pretty set on Apex but started looking around some more and found that I can buy the exact same new house in Wake Forest for $50,000 less than Apex.  Yes, the drive is longer to RTP but for $50,000 I can make an exception plus I can get that 3rd car garage option as a workshop

Questions I have are what are these towns like and are there other places I should be looking?  I want a smallish town (WF is around 20,000 now I think) with affordable property taxes and affordable homes.  Any feedback at all would be appreciated.
