Thanks for the refresher, kgbsquirrel!  I've forgotten a whole bunch of theory... although ULF versus whatever isn't theory, it's just a set of arbitrary divisions.  And I don't know what formal range of frequencies they actually use for submarine communications, but it's, ummm... <ahem>... Very Very Low.  Maybe even Very Very Very Low Frequency. (VVVLF)

OK, I'm going to finalize my guess:

It's an output tank circuit for a transmitter for submarine communication.  Maybe even the whole transmitter.

Any arguments? <juts out jaw>  Ha?  Ha?  C'mon, c'mon, let's hear 'em.

^ Very good.  LMAO!

However, regarding pic searches...

A long time ago, maybe even as far back as Windows 3.1, I noticed that every once in a while, when I tried to open a picture, I'd goof somethig up and get a whole slew of "ASCII garbage."

Looks like this:

x-¶ùZ[»@7
Ž9RAP8ÿ ?Joá½ïo-¾]ÿ «nM-ªÛþþüìË'Å’`cë‘ý?Ïj¥¦þë_wô¬$öÓEý}ÞðShŒýÒHÆ ¯½%ÉuÒÛÛ~Þ_ð<íp¶¯5ýoýy–SîãwO©íÅM쬥ÿ ú·ß~àåËÒß×õ¸9Žmôý}Z§éËoÃ{]|¾äûmµ¿õ½

This happens to be a selection of ASCII from a JPG picture of a steam engine I built.

I figured those must be the ASCII equivalents of whatever format the individual pixels in the picture were.

"Aha," I said to myself. "Self, I wonder if I could search for a picture by using a small selection of "ASCII garbage" taken from a portion of the picture?" So I selected out a short segment (about fifteen "characters") of one of the lines and copied it to the internal operating system search window, and sure enough, it found the picture.  At least most of the times I tried it.

I saw no real practical use for this, since you had to have a copy of the picture in the first place to search for the picture, but I always wondered if this might be a departure point for a practical picture search engine.

Well - as you may already know - it's not really ASCII but just an ASCII representation of the byte values (0x00..0xFF) of the file.

I pasted the above into a hex editor, which shows:

0x78 0x2D 0xB6 0xF9 0x7F 0x5A .......

or

01111000
00101101
10110110
11111001
01111111
01011010
......

HSTLF must be for 1-3hz. You know it's low when your wavelength is measure in the hundreds of thousands of miles (and you need an antenna respectively sized).

"hey no porn pix!"

Harold Tuttle, it's only pr0n if you get all hornified and bonerized about pix of miniature steam engines.

And Tallpine, you can't put

01111000
00101101
10110110
11111001
01111111
01011010

into the OS system search window and expect to find it.

She's actually quite attractive....when she's not trying to be a female version of David Bowie (or, in other words, David Bowie)....  ;/

^ Answer too obvious ("most significant nybble").  I want to get off that track anyhow.

Yeah, that section of coding is from this pic of a double-acting piston-valve engine I threw together from scrap parts.  (I think it was this particular pic --I've lost track now and I have several shots of it.)  The cylinder is a brake cylinder from an MG automobile, the rim of the flywheel is a section of 3" pipe. The base is just a hunk of sheet metal from somewhere.  Exhaust is simply out the ends of the piston valve housing.

Built circa 1977, 1978.

It's been pretty banged up (I didn't bother to prime the base, so a lot of paint got knocked off when someone pushed it off my desk.)  Other parts were turned on my lathe.

Like I say, I just threw it together (20 hours?) when I found the brake cylinder.  When it was tuned up,  you could make it turn at about one RPM from breath pressure alone.  But knocking it off my desk bent the base slightly so the parts got misaligned and you need at least 5 PSI to make it run (badly) at all.  Poor engineering on my part, there.  I should have foreseen the possibility of it being dropped three feet.

Bad engineer!  No steam for you!

It's a lousy pic. If I'm not mistaken, I just threw it upside down on the scanner.

So.  No Lady Gaga.  Steam engine. Not gurl. Steam engine.  So don't get all hornified and bonerized over it.
