Too many favorites to list. Brown Sugar, Can't You Hear Me Knockin', Jumpin' Jack Flash (the sign that the crap was over and they were starting a new sound), Carol (live), Little Queenie (live), Sympathy For The Devil (live, two of the best guitar solos ever), Love in Vain (live), Mona...

My sweet girl was once his wife
He had papers the judge had signed
The wind blew hard, it was stormy night
He shot me once, but I shot him twice
The hand of fate is on me now
It pick me up and it kicked me right down
Kicked me right down
Kicked me right down

Can't You Hear Me Knockin' : http://www.last.fm/music/The+Rolling+Stones/_/Can't+You+Hear+Me+Knocking

The first part of the song is great, typical of the Stones' fare in the very early 1970's. As originally written, it was much shorter than the final recorded version. On one of the first takes in studio, the band finished the song, but Mick Taylor just kept on playing. The other band members picked up their instruments and followed along. The end result is the song we have now, with Taylor's improvised solo that begins at 4:40.

Lord, I know that this is going to get me perma-banned, but....

I've grown up on rock and roll.

I can barely tolerate the Stones, the Who, and the Beatles.

You lose no points for not liking a sub genera of something as subjective and inconsequential as pop music.

I like Beggar's Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and the masterpiece Exile on Mainstreet.  Some Girls and Tattoo You were quite nice, too.

Just turned 54, Dick.

They fall into my genre, but I just never warmed up to them.

The Rolling Stones ARE rock 'n roll.

Jamie B, at your age, you were bombarded with the Stones, Beatles and to a lesser extent The Who before you reached adolescence. I could see where you'd get burned out on them. I feel the same way about Bobby Vinton. ;) By the time you reached high school, the Beatles had broken up, and IMHO the Stones were past their prime.

I've been listening to a lot of music the last several months, and listening to a lot of music from the late 60's and early 70's. There was a lot of junk as well as a lot of good stuff. In listening, though, I really am struck by how much better the Stones are in terms of guitar. The guitar work for The Doors was fairly simple, as was just about every other group. The Stones started with simple guitar in the mid-sixties, but by 1969-1972 Richards and Taylor really played with more skill and style than most other big-name groups.

Can someone find me a youtube of the epic live performance of "Sympathy for the Devil," I think it was 1968 or 69? I think Chuck Berry was at the same festival.

I can only find video with sound of the Altamont show, which wasn't very good. What's needed is the 1969 New York show, but I've only seen that show in bits and pieces in the movie "Gimme Shelter".

I have some negatives of photos I shot of them at the Milwaukee County Stadium in 1974, but they're faded too much to print. It's too bad, because I was up close and got some really good shots.

Dayum, Dick, you are good! You're right.

What, then, would be the best Stones song reflecting the guitar work you admire?

Most, but not all, of the songs on Sticky Fingers have excellent guitar work. I think it was a combination of the group trying to highlight Mick Taylor (which didn't work out anyway), and maybe Taylor forcing Keith Richards to be better. Whatever it was, that was an exceptional album, and I think the best they've done. Exile was really good as well. After that I felt they were losing their focus.

I'll sometimes dismiss Richards as a guitarist until I listen to the work of most other groups, and then realize that despite his weirdness, he is a really good player. He's been ranked in the top ten rock guitarists for years, so I guess I'm not the only one who thinks that way.
