Best place to get an anvil?
« on: June 25, 2013, 10:48:06 PM »
Aside from cruising farm estate sales that is. My boss is getting into knife making and asked me to help him find an anvil as I have a bit of a reputation for finding obscure items. Anyone have any suggestions? 100-150lb, with horn and hardy hole.

Google gave me that site. Has some advice, and some retailers.

Craigslist has several in my area as well.

MSC, harbor freight, and Grainger sell new ones.

just get a hack saw and visit the rail way.....  No wait, that would be bad.

Seriously, a old farming hardware store (like an old ACE hardware) should have one.  I have seen them at Harbor Freight, but you get what you pay for with them.  Horn will probably break off.

I troll CL regularly. I have 2, not coming off of either. Should be able to find someone online selling railroad track anvils for about $70, cheap way to find out if it's for him.

Do your research first.
There are a lot of things that look like anvils that are garbage, there are also a lot of things that don't look like anvils at all that make good anvils.

Craigslist and ebay are good places to look, though the shipping charges on ebay will be a killer.

He's currently looking at a new option that's around $650 and was hoping I could point him to something that's either better or the same quality but cheaper.

I should also point out that he's actually a decent knifemaker, but he's always done the work at his uncle's forge and he's just looking to set his own place up.

While if you seriously scour you can find one for a reasonable price the major problem is everybody who isnt living under a rock has realized anvils command higher prices.

Drop forged 275 pound 2-horn steel anvil with milled and hardened striking surfaces.  A tad bit pricey, though...

That should be a really well made anvil, though its on the light side. I'm pretty sure those are made in Austria.

For $600+ one should be able to find a used Swedish or Austrian anvil that weighs twice that much, or a 200-300lb very old English anvil.

Here's one recently on ebay..  http://www.ebay.com/itm/blacksmith-anvil-N-O-H-A-B-SWEDEN-Very-Rare-and-desireable-Sodefors-Kohlswa-/321125335755?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=VfI3L3LArbltbPj%252BKRRMmcvd%252B0E%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Nimba Anvils.  Steel, and made in the USA, but cast and not forged.

The nice thing about Nimba is they're local, so he could just pick it up and save on shipping.

Nimba Titan is probably the best bet for a new steel anvil. Rest tend to be cast iron. I'm looking for one myself, just can't pony the cash for an anvil yet when I have a bunch of other tools to buy first. Probably just go with a section of rail for a while.
