House prices in Spain and France are considerably better. As far as 'not getting it', the vast vast majority of people leaving the UK are going to Australia, indicating to me that perhaps the reasons that some are leaving are as simple as sun, fresh air, space and work.

I know a couple of Brits living here in the USA . . . one just got his citizenship papers last year.

I won't say that I've spoken a LOT to these folks about the reason for their move, but when the subject has come up taxes and economic opportunity seem to be their major reasons for emigration . . . though crime and government regulations were factors, as well.

(The methods one of them used to get his own money out of Britain were eye-opening, and, I'm sure in the eyes of the Brit government, illicit.)  cool

It all boils down to a little thing called "freedom" . . .

Yeah, how does the economy compare to places like Oz, the US, Spain, France?  Did they ever climb out of that post-war slump?

We aren't doing all that badly, as a nation, to be honest. A lot of people are simply not happy with paying huge taxes, and not seeing results.

I get taxed about 22% of my wages, on average (Income tax and National Insurance), so I get a bit upset when I see some of the wasteful social programs that they are trying to implement.

Agreed, 22% doesn't seem that high.  But what do Britons pay in other taxes?

By the time I pay income tax, property tax, sales tax and gasoline tax (those are all I can think of right now), probably 40% of my income is gone.
