Folks, lets not have our own version of the DemocraticUndergoundMeltdown of 2004.  Falling into hysterics will achieve nothing.

Someone's gonna be doing a victory dance on the graves of the people who built this nation.

Oh, yes, losing the United States of America to a cabal of hardcore socialists is nothing to get upset about, nothing at all.

Do you not understand that IT IS OVER? This is not a game, this is not a minor setback. That was IT.

Game over.

Thats true.  Look at why this happened, understand it, then aim for 2012.  Thanks to BHO its likely to be no-spending-limit, so you will need the money.

Unfortunately, we will have less money by the time 2012 comes around. (In general).

However, if we survied 4 TERMS of FDR screwing the country, we can survive four years of Barack Obama.

It's going to suck, we're going to spend 30 years fixing it, but we can survive it.

I'm not giving up on the last best hope for mankind yet.

Remember McCain was nominated because he was bland, moderate, and  'electable',

Where is your electability now?

Or we see him capitulate after the next terrorist attack... Not gonna be pretty.

As for McCain... There are people in the Republican party who still think that Dan Quayle is a marketable candidate.

The core leadership just doesn't get it.

Uh, he was nominated because several states had open primaries.  McCain got fewer actual Republican votes than other candidates in most primaries until Romney conceded.

Who else would have done any better?  Obama had several times more money to spend, nearly all of the media in love with him, an economy that convieniently tanked, an unpopular Republican incumbent to point at, and if all that didnt work he had ACORN and all that crowd with which to "get out the vote".  In 2012 it may well be he has none of those things.

I am not saying that McCain didnt make mistakes, but he could have run a perfect race and still would have faced all of the above.

Boy, McCain had a big, long, Jesse Jackson-esque concession speech prepared. He hit all the Dem's favorite talking points.

Maybe he really didn't want to win.

Gun ownership might take a hit, but I have no idea if there will be any support for it in the House of the 111th Congress.  Other than that nothing much will change.

The tax cuts don't go away until 2010, when maybe the Republicans can take back the House.  If they screw up bad enough it could happen.

Agricola nailed it. McCain was the only candidate who could have gotten this far considering the obstacles. This was going to be the Democrat's year, no matter what.

If you want to blame somebody for Obama, blame Howard Dean. He rigged the game so that Hillary would lose. I'd be much more comfortable had she won.

In hindsight:  Huckabee.  He's at least popular enough with the Republican base to get a show on Fox.  He's likeable and not too far out there for moderates, what with being a populist and all.  Given his executive experience and religious background he could have picked an exciting newcomer from the northeast as a running mate that was big on fiscal responsibility.

How so?

McCain was laboring under a huge disadvantage of his own making - being a moderate, and I don't use that as a compliment.

That pretty much automatically meant a large part of the Party was not worked up enough to donate until a late stage in the game.

He was a moderate Republican, which meant he could not genuinely engage Obama on the issue like Thompson or Huckabee or that other guy would have.

Yep.  Thompson, Huckabee, and the other guy would have gotten my vote today if they got the nod.

My old man, lifelong Republican, aside from that Ross Perot thing in 1992, only voted for McCain because he's a Republican.  He didn't have a single reason to actually vote for the guy other than he wasn't a Democrat and didn't seem too pleased about it.

If you want to get Republicans excited and out to the polls on the 2nd Tuesday of November it really really helps if they're more than a RINO.

Its very difficult to engage with people when the main way you do that - the media - is so blatantly biased as they have been during this election.  I think its a fantasy to suggest that anyone - especially Huckabee - would have recieved any more favourable coverage, indeed it would probably have been a lot worse than it was.

I mean, on at least three occasions that we know of media outlets have deliberately buried stories that might have harmed Obama's chances.  They have actively promoted his lines and rubbished McCains, irrespective of whether they are actually true.  We had an Obama advert pass without much negative comment that stated McCain and Rush Limbaugh were friends.  Of course, on top of it all was the disgraceful treatment of Sarah Palin which verged from the ridiculous to the plain unethical.

The media has helped to dupe a large number of your fellow citizens into voting for this man.  Somehow I doubt people will forget that come 2012.

Although it seems to me that McCain didn't really want to win the way his campaign went (limp, bland, etc.), I agree that the deck was stacked against him.  My disgust towards most journalists grew exponentially this year.  Besides what you mentioned, there was also the comparison of Obama to JFK.  The people voted for style over substance in my opinion.  And I won't forget.
