Urgent - What's that quote?
« on: December 24, 2011, 10:29:08 PM »
I remember reading on THR, or here, a quote about how every man should be able to do certain things.  Anyone have that handy?

I'm guessing it's the Robert Heinlein quote, in the mouth of his character Lazarus Long, in Time Enough for Love.

Quote
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”

Found it here after a quick google search.
In thy presence is fulness of joy.
At thy right hand pleasures for evermore.

Just don't forget another of L.L. quotations, quite appropriate for the season.

Quote
Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors, and miss.
I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

"Rub her feet."
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Check out 'The Notebooks of Lazarus Long', available on Nook or Kindle for $4.99 and originally published in 'Time Enough For Love' as excerpts from the memoirs of the character Lazarus Long.  Republished in book form a couple of times, most recently by Baen (sadly, not in Webscriptions, apparently). I had the Baen edition, back in '04, but think I must have donated it -I no longer own it.  I'll have to get the Kindle edition, as I have a Kindle reader on my phone and that collection of Heinlein wisdom should be in my collection.

Old-World Courtliness and an innate sense of Tact prevents me from commenting.  Also, the threat of community censure.

I'm not signing this one so nobody will know who posted it.

Used that during my 'Best Man' speech at my buddy's wedding.  My soon-to-be wife was in attendance, and that was the part of the speech she remembered.  Much to my chagrin, of course.

You guys are leaving out the tag line:  "Specialization is for insects."

The tag line popped up in third place when I typed "specializa" into Google.

Edit:  Ooops!  Never mind!
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

One to keep near your heart during Primary season:

"Extremism in the defense of Liberty is no vice... and Moderation in the pursuit of Justice is no virtue."  Not Heinlein... Goldwater.
"But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain - that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist."
--Lysander Spooner
