Man Hit on I-15 Trying to Retrieve Pet Duck
August 25th, 2006 @ 12:19pm
(KSL News) -- A man is in serious condition after he was hit by a car on I-15.

The man was walking in the emergency lane near Woods Cross. He then went out into traffic to try and retrieve his pet duck.

When traffic stopped, a Jeep swerved to avoid another car - hitting the man.

Utah Highway Patrol Troopers told the man to leave the freeway just minutes before the accident.

Sgt. Matt Smith, Utah Highway Patrol: Not a safe place to be. The freeway is a limited access highway. It's not a place for people to be because of traffic volume and high speeds."

The incident is still under investigation.

Troopers say pedestrians are not allowed on the freeway. In fact, they are not allowed past the signal at the on-ramp.

Dig the tambourine.  Pet duck, my ass.  You know that thing was either trying to get away from him or commit suicide by waddling out onto the highway.

This was no "accident".  It was fowl play.

I'm sure his injuries were from being goosed by the Jeep.  Apart from that, it's a poultry offense . . .

Would-be rescuer of duck gets hit

A transient apparently trying to save a duck from the freeway so it wouldn't get hit ended up getting struck by a vehicle Friday morning.
Just before 8 a.m. a man carrying an 80-pound backpack was spotted by Utah Highway Patrol troopers walking on the 2600 South onramp of I-15 near Woods Cross. The man was told by the trooper to leave the road immediately.
A few minutes later, however, the man apparently saw a duck on the freeway and went out to get it to save it from getting hit, according to a UHP report.
Two vehicles were entering the freeway at the same time the man ran into traffic. The first spotted the pedestrian and stopped. The second did not see the pedestrian and swerved out of the way at the last second to avoid hitting the first car that had stopped.
The second vehicle swerved into the emergency lane, clipping the pedestrian.
The UHP says the man suffered a broken pelvis. Troopers didn't know what happened to the duck.

Actually, it's the duct-taped end of a trombone case.  If you run the video clip at the first link, you'll see it quite clearly.
