It's kind of cool watching some of the stuff we see  these days, rocket powered sky cranes autonomously landing rovers on Mars and here we we have LASERs shooting down aircraft.
So much of what we take for granted today was wild Science fiction when I graduated from High school.

It seems to me that lasers ought to be fairly effective against jets as they are generally not heavily armored and their wings are full of fuel.
