EARTHQUAKE IN WASHINTON, DC!!!!
« on: May 06, 2008, 10:11:44 AM »
WHERE THE HELL IS MY FEDERAL AID?

Felt this one very strongly at my office in Fairfax...

WASHINGTON - A small earthquake struck the D.C. area Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey says.
The earthquake measured 1.8 on the Richter scale and the epicenter was 1 mile west southwest of Annandale (38.828°N, 77.234°W), the U.S. Geological Survey says.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck at 1:30 p.m.

In an advisory to federal agencies, FEMA's Operations says that the National Earthquake Information Center is reporting the D.C. area experienced rumblings equivalent to a magnitude 2 to 3 earthquake.

The rumblings rattled parts of Northern Virginia - including Vienna, Falls Church, Annandale and Baileys Crossroads - around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

There is no word on any damage.

Earlier, Ft. Belvoir officials told WTOP the rumblings were part of construction blasts at the base.

Blasts are scheduled at Ft. Belvoir at 4:15 p.m.

The blasts are part of the construction at Ft. Belvoir for the new National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. The agency is moving its headquarters to Ft. Belvoir and as part of the region's base realignment and closure project.

Ft. Belvoir officials say people may feel more rumblings over the new few days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Do they have any after-hours rumblings available? I'd hate to have to use up a lunch hour. . .

Oh hell no. They're building--on an emergency basis because nobody got serious when BRAC passed--office space for something like 10,000 new fed employees who will move to Belvoir next year! GD bureaucrats.

Why do we need 10,000 more federal employees?

And why don't they just subdivide the congressional offices and put the new employees in there? I'd be all for that.

They aren't all new employees, as in new hires.

They are relocating to Belvoir from places in Maryland, DC, and Virginia.

1.8?  We had about a 2.5 this weekend.  And a 6 and a 5 about a month ago.

Paddy will be along to laugh at us both, shortly.   smiley

You're going to feel small if the Cascadia lets loose with a 9+ off Seattle.

Whole "ring of fire" seems a little more active lately, what with that volcano in Chile blowing for the first time in 2000 years, and lots of swarm earthquakes.

Is washinton near Washington? cheesy

Technically this whole area is one huge fault zone, but it's not a plate boundary fault zone.

Most of our faults came when Pangea began to break up. Upwellings caused north-south cracks in the eastern 1/3rd of the United States that became inclusion dikes of extremely hard igneous diabase.

There are occasionally small earth tremors along the fault lines caused by the separation, but they're rather rare.

There's a deep flume gorge near Franconia Notch that, when you visit it, is a reminder that yes, New England DID have volcanoes a long, long time ago. The broken pieces of a basalt dike are along the gorge floor, and you can see branches of hardened basalt along the walls.

Pretty much everywhere had volcanoes at some point in the distant past. It's just a question of whether there is any evidence left.

The New England Hotspot was responsible for a lot of basaltic lava flows that are seen in New England and Canada. It's also thought that the diamond deposits in Canada were caused by the New England Hotspot.
