Interpreter at Mandela Event a Fake

A "sign language interpreter" at the Mandela memorial was apparently a fake, making nonsense gestures with his hands. Pic at the link has him standing right next to Obama. Fine security they got going there. :)

I'm sure Obama's Whitehouse had him vetted.

I have gotten a kick out of all the feigned outrage about the "news' outlets ridiculing the fake interpreter being taken as ridiculing hearing impaired people.

Today's nooz has him saying 1) he's schitzophrenic, 2) he was hearing voices, and 3) he's sorry.

As for #2 above -  :facepalm:

Oh, wait!  Maybe he meant he was hearing voices from his schitzophrenia.  Given the setting, I would think ot kind of difficult to tell if the voices in your head were real or not.

Neither he nor the company that hired him are releasing any details about his qualifications as an interpreter.

And the world is all atwitter about how the Secret Service slipped up and allowed this nutjob to stand right next to the Prez.  Why, the guy might have turned around and killed him.  How did our background checking system fail?  Heads need to roll!

Apparently the guy has his own private sign language, since no one else seems able to understand it.  Maybe it's just a thick accent?  In any case he seems to think he knows what he's doing.  Even if nobody else does.

According to the ABC news, the interpreter now says he has schizophrenia and was hallucinating.  He had been used as a signing interpreter before by the SA Government.

There's some noise that gang-sign guy has had contact with the legal establishment regarding, among other things, murder.

I am well aware that the greater responsibility for vetting anybody that gets near the dignitaries, let alone onto the stage next to any political personage, rests with the other USA.  But, as some few pundits have been inquiring, were our SS guys out chasing hookers again instead of either cross-checking or pulling the guy off the stage when it became apparent he was not legit?

And just because I'm lazy, would someone answer this question that's been gnawing at my frontal cortex ever since the story broke: Was gang-sign guy on stage just for Obama's speech/oration/eulogy/bragfest?
