Anybody else wind up working Christmas?
« on: December 25, 2007, 06:29:55 PM »
I'm pulling my normal 1030-2300 shift, getting holiday pay at least. One of the downsides to working for a 24/7/365 organization. Anyone else been stuck at work today?

I worked today, Christmas that is.

But I volunteered for it.  I can "do Christmas" any day of the week.  My wife and I will celebrate on Thursday.  In the mean time, I'll take the double-time pay, thank you very much.

I got up a bit early and stopped at my folk's place this morning before work, so I still got to be with the family. My biggest gripe is that it has been dead slow today, which makes a 12 hour shift take about three days to finally end.

I worked Sat-Tues this week. Fun.

Really wasn't so bad, except dealing with people being slightly more drunk than usual when I go home. (2300)

I was nearly T-boned by some idiot going over 50 THROUGH a 4 way stop. (I came to a stop, started on through, then saw lights coming around the corner FAST. I haven't slammed my brakes that hard in a long time.) Looking back, I wish I had honked at the slimebag. Hopefully, it would have distracted him, and caused him to yank his wheel. Since he was driving an Explorer, I would have laughed had it flipped. As nearly as that clown came to hitting (and as fast as he was going, probably would have hospitalized me for a while at a minimum), I just cannot make myself feel bad for what could have happened to him.

I worked Christmas, but then I work all the time. The double-time pay is going towards a S&W 500. grin

Rabbi, it's an Al Gore's Internet phenomenon.  Sort of like Valentine's day only not as pink.

Yep.  Sitting here in the office now.   Boring day so far.  I had to re-run two backup jobs that failed over the weekend and fixed a few minor user problems for those who also had to come in.   Bleah.

I moved a bunch of crap from my old house to my new one.  Then I cleaned my old place so I wouldn't be giving the landlord a dirty place back.  I still haven't slept yet.  (I keep dozing off at work but nobody seems to care)

The Pentagon is like a ghost town. JCS is on normal duty rotation, but everybody else is apparently finding more important stuff elsewhere. The next-to-last person just left my office at 2:30, but I have to stay until 4:30 for my van pool. This is deadly boring!

BTDT as an Air Traffic Controller.  In the Marines, as a Civivlian Contractor for the FAA, and then for the FAA itself.  People don't realize how many minions it takes to run the country, 24/7, 365, holidays be damned.
After being awoken in the middle of the night on New Years or the 4th of July by fireworks, when you're trying to rest for an early shift, you begin to become jaded towards such festivities.  Bastards, I'll show 'em where to stick that bottle rocket!
This year was a first for me....working for ones-self is a nice thing....

Does consuming large quantities of food and alcohol count as work?
If not. No than.

Yeah, I worked Christmas too.  Another of those many minions who have to be there.

But I get paid double for it.  And I was off at 1400 and got to Christmas dinner with time to spare.
