An Iowa man completed his Lent-long beer fast on Sunday, marking the occasion with a bacon smoothie. During the 46-day feat, J. Wilson consumed only beer and water, emulating a centuries-old tradition once practiced by the Paulaner monks of Munich, Germany. How long could a man survive on beer and water?

Not more than a few months, probably. That's when the worst effects of scurvy and protein deficiency would kick in. (Liver disease is a serious risk of chronic alcohol use, but it takes longer to arrive.) If you kept to a strict beer diet—and swore off plain water altogether—you'd likely die of dehydration in a matter of days or weeks, depending on the strength and volume of beer consumed. There's plenty of water in beer, of course, but the alcohol's diuretic effect makes it a net negative in terms of hydration under most conditions.

Initial reaction was Not very damn long.

Is there enough actual citrus in beers like Summer Shandys with the lemon in them to ward off scurvy?

My thoughts exactly, brew up beer with citrus and protein added.

Unfiltered, unpasteurized beer (e.g. homebrewed beer) contains significantly more vitamins and nutrients , including protein, than the mass-produced product. Thus, I suspect, the traditional beer fast was much healthier.

I bet the occasional Gin and Tonic would go a long way to help warding off scurvy.

We could call it the APS Diet.  Beer, Steak, and Bacon (with the occasional G&T).  It's perfect !!!!

For the gin haters, Lime Rickeys with vodka (for the added calories) or pina coladas or any of a book full of citrus-based recipes.

All suitable for being served poolside by wenches (towel boys for the ladies).

Don't forget pizza.  I would mention fajita nachos, but that is sort of combining things.

That is what I was thinking.  Big difference between that and a Coors Light or the like.
