Sharpton saves Saint Louis!

(1/1)

Perd Hapley:
Well, the blackout in Saint Louis will soon be over; Sharpton's here.  The Dauntless Reverend has bravely come against the evil "Ameron EU," his name for Ameren UE, by leading a protest at its headquarters.  Of course this happened the same morning that a lineman (henchman) died in the line of duty, when he stepped on a live line hidden under brush.  As he was working in one of the area's most affluent communities, it must have been karma.  One wonders if he might also have been on the end of his third sixteen-hour shift or there-abouts.

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Tuesday, Jul. 25 2006

The Rev. Al Sharpton called for Ameren Corp. to roll back rates and drop its
request for a fee hike in a news conference in front of the company's
headquarters this morning.

Sharpton, appearing with state Rep. Yaphett El-Amin, is asking that Ameren
reduce costs to consumers by 10%, because of the hardship customers suffered
during the recent blackouts.

"This is a national concern. There have been blackouts in New York, there have
been blackouts all over the country," Sharpton said. "When power companies fail
people should not have to pick up the tab."

Sharpton said that he would give Ameren time to respond before there would be
further "demonstration" or "confrontation."

The outages are an issue that impact the poor and affluent alike, Sharpton
said.

"One thing about living in a mansion or a housing project -- it all looks the
same in the dark," Sharpton said.

Sharpton arrived at Ameren Corp's headquarters on Chouteau Ave. in style,
pulling up in a black BMW sedan that stayed parked in the street while Sharpton
addressed the media.

The New York preacher and former presidential candidate is no stranger to St.
Louis. He was here several years ago to protest the lack of minority jobs on
I-70's construction. In 2003 Sharpton was part of a protest targeting the first
day of city public schools.http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/F1B24690399BF714862571B60058B142?OpenDocument
