Mixing single and dual channel will disable interleaving.

XP will recognize 4GB, but it will likely show up as 3.5 or so because of your other devices (usually video does most of it).

Kingston? Gskill? Corsair?  What say you?

Kingston's what I usually sell people.  No problems.

32-bit XP Pro will recognize up to 4GB, right?

Yes and no.  BIOS will say 4GB, Windows will say something less, like 3.5 GB.    A necessary chunk of the memory space needs to get used for other stuff.

I've been a fan of Crucial memory when I need some extra RAM.

Crucial has a great reputation among Mac users, at least it did a few years ago, when last I looked into it.

Memory either works, or it doesn't.  I haven't noticed any difference in long term reliability from ANY manufacturer, even cheap brands like PNY.

After you put in some RAM, run Memtest86+ overnight.  If you don't get any errors, you're golden.  If you do, even if you only get one single bit of error, take the ram back - it's trash.

Memtest86+ is on the Fedora 11 live CD, which is open source and free to download.

Not now.  Not for a while.  I do remember, back in the mid-90s getting a bad batch from a dubious third tier vendor.  Each and every one of a dozen or so sticks ended up needing to get replaced.

Anyone using it yet?

On another machine, I'm using Firefox 3.5 Beta 4.  No issues with it, but I don't use it much.  I like the feature that allows you to drag and drop tabs.

Works for me at home.

My 4 year old Dell Inspirion with a pokey Celeron in it surfs about 4x faster than Mrs. Dual's brand new Toshiba with Vista and IE 8...  =D

I find it to be significantly faster than earlier versions of Firefox.  Chrome is faster still, but does not have the addons I like.

I'm still using Firefox 2.0.0.20. There's too much to dislike about Firefox 3.xx ... starting with the goofy way it displays recently-visted sites when you start to type a new URL into the address window. And ... THERE'S NO WAY TO TURN IT OFF (except an add-on)!

I've replaced it with Google Chrome.

Fistful's never-ending computer Q&A thread...

In a few days, I'll be switching out the motherboard in this machine. I had a problem, and Dell sent me a new motherboard. I thought it would be pretty straightforward, until I saw the three disks of drivers, diagnostics and utilities they shipped with it. What sort of issues should I expect?

I bought this machine used a few months ago, and I think it was a pretty good deal.  Still under warranty, too.   =)

If it's the exact same motherboard, BIOS, and chipset, you won't need any of them.

Windows has drivers for the chipsets, integrated video, the network adapter, USB etc. that may be on there. If Windows Plug & Play goes nuts when you boot back up for the first time, generally, sticking in those disks as it asks for them should be relatively painless.

If you use Firefox 3.0.?? use this add-on to clear the location bar: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7429

In ver 3.5, there is an option to select for what is displayed. No need to use the add on.
