Fort Hood, TX: Shooting
« on: November 05, 2009, 03:32:46 PM »
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,572305,00.html

7 dead, 12 wounded.  1 suspect in custody.  No other details available.

Who in their right mind (because all mass shooters are in their right mind... but I digress) attacks an Army base?

Enemies of our country.
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

At least when I was in, that would be a very safe place to do a shooting.  Nobody is armed, you might see folks with guns but at worst they will have blanks.

Once you get past the gate, most bases/posts are remarkably gun-free zones.

Suppose this is a looney-lefty conspiracy to draw attention away from the "Remember, Remember the 5th of November" rally in DC today?

PS:  Can we extend the functionality of the SMF software to actually do something with the [tinfoil] tag? =D

Also, ditto what everyone said about bases being mostly unarmed. Aside from MP's and maybe armourers on duty, nobody generally has weapons on them, let alone ammo.

What he said.

Don't forget, there was those guys in New Jersey that got nabbed planning an attack on Dix.

If I may speculate: It won't be right wing nuts.

Right wing nuts don't go after the US Army. They go after government agencies (FBI, ATF, etc...)

I'm with Jamis- it's Muslim militants that did this.

I'm hoping it is, I just don't want it to be a couple GI's that flipped.

This. Sadly, I think that's a fairly likely scenario.  =(

On one liberal site I occasionally lurk to see what the "other side" is thinking, they're crowing about how "see? the wing-nuts said if more people were armed mass-shootings wouldn't happen, But it happened at an army base where everyone has guns!", despite the fact being the opposite, as mentioned. Also they're putting their money on a right-wing terror group.  ;/

This. Sadly, I think that's a fairly likely scenario.  =(

With each additional shooter, the odds of it being "domestic nuttery" goes down exponentialy. If it's just the two shooters, I'll grant a SLIM chance it's disgruntled/deranged people.

Three shooters who were pissed/disgruntled and decided to go out in a blaze of glory, extremely unlikely.

Then it's jihadi's or domestic converts/sympathizers. Recall there were six who planned such an attack on Ft. Dix recently.
I promise not to duck.

While we await more news, it's tough to not speculate. Does anyone know if there are any units now at Fort Hood that have recently returned from Iraq or Afghanistan?

There was a report from a congressional aide that was there that there was a graduation ceremony going on today.  And that there was a lot of shooting at the in/outprocessing center.

FWIW.

According to Fox News:

Quote
Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said... the post is a processing center where soldiers are processed before going to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Looks like Fort Hood is where they go BEFORE heading to Iraq/Afganistan.

Based on the lack of detail/confirmation, it could still be two incidents/one shooter. Still, I'm hoping this wasn't a soldier(s).

They have both units heading out and those coming back.

The links on DrudgeReport.com has a couple links.

Quote
Banks says two shooters were apparently involved. There was no immediate word on who they were, nor on identities of the dead.

Banks says the second incident took place at a theater on the sprawling base.

Another Army official identified that site as the Howze Theater.

That official, who requested anonymity to discuss an evolving incident, said a graduation had been scheduled for 2 p.m. at the theater.
