Child Porn online-who is that reported to?
« on: January 23, 2006, 05:30:50 AM »
Last night while roaming distant corners of the web, I came across a kiddie porn site.  I'm pretty sure it isn't an American site.  What agency handles this?

FBI I think.  You should have a field office near you.  Number can be found at http://www.fbi.gov/contact/fo/fo.htm .

A few months ago I got a solicitation for a kiddie porn site. I opened the e-mail (came under an innocuous heading) and just about lost my dinner.

I deleted it, and about an hour later did the "I could have had a V-8" head slap when I realized I should have forwarded it on to some official entity.

If it isn't an American site, I don't there is much they are going to be able to do.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The greatest strength, and weakness, of the internet, is it is about as open and free as you can get.  Here in America, that site would be brought down and the owners locked away, but Somalian warlords got more important things to wory about that shutting down kiddie porn sites.  And ex-Soviet officals are going to look the other way when the cash flows in.

A child pornagraphy internet ring was busted up a year ago in my area. A group of middle aged men (is there any other type of child pornographer) where preying on children, sending photos to a server somewhere in eastern europe, which they funded.

If you report them, they will probably be put on some sort of watch list until enough evidence is found to prosecute any American owners/users.

I think that Customs takes care of the importation of child porn but not sure if it's just physical materials or if it also includes electronic.

Oh, sometimes those emails that you get or the sites themselves are sting sites but on by various governments to get pedo's to give their private information and then bust them at a later date.

IIRC, this is what I used to report a child pornography site sent to me via an IM a long while back.

The internet site itself may very well be legal in it's home country, and as such there may be nothing that U.S. authorities can do about its presence. However, any viewers of that site who happen to be in the U.S. could certainly be prosecuted for possession of child pornography.

You probably already thought of this, but I would delete my temporary internet files, hisory, and cookies, just for some piece of mind. It wont completely cover your trail, but it will prevent a casual viewer from thinking that your up to some hinkey stuff.

c_yeager,

So if I visit one of these sites, don't download anything, and report it, I can be prosecuted for possession?  That certainly wouldn't encourage me to do the right thing and report it!

You dont have to actively download anything. Any picture that you see online has already been "downloaded" to your machine. So if the front page of that site has any illegal images, I cannot see a way that one would be completely safe since you are actually in possession of those images. I doubt you would be prosecuted, but it's best to play it safe.

Look at it this way. If you find a bag of crack on a street corner, pick it up, and turn it into the police, you *could* be hit for possession since you, well, had it in your possession. This is one reason why im not a huge fan of laws that make it illegal to simply touch an object or piece of data.

OK, I understand that, and the people supporting it here getting hit.  Just pointing out that there isn't much that can be done about the site itself.

Here in Texas, the Texas Attorney Generals office handles reports and passes them to the FBI or other agencies as required.  You might try the same in your state.

Among other things, I'm an e-mail server administrator for about 5,000 users and our company accounts as well.  Every few months, I report a child porn sender to the TX AG's office.

I'm not sure if just deleting history, temp internet files and cookies will do it.  Isn't there a "deeper layer" that you can't easily get to?

Last time I checked, this would be a bad idea. You save the info, and CALL the agency, letting them know what you found and asking them how to proceed...

they don't seem to care much. (F.B.I)
www.craigslist.org  promotes illegal prostitution on it's website (under the erotic services section)
and I've seen at least three reports of underage girls being forced into prostitution in the news and have reported questionable ads to the FBI (interstate prostitution) all I got was a form letter.
when I asked at the feedback section (at craigslist) all they can say is "flag" the ad, I did but nothing happens.
Oh BTW craigslist won't let you offer a 10/22 for sale if you do it gets shut down...but they  "can't stop all the prostitution"
