Afficionados of old equipment?
« on: August 18, 2010, 04:05:04 PM »
In an old building in downtown L.A., converted to lofts, there is a fire pump room. At the back of the fire pump room is a door. Behind that door and down a flight of stairs:

So, a steam driven waterpump (and a lot of asbestos), that's some neat machinery there. Bet it would still work too if you cleaned it up a bit and greased the bearings/fittings. Thanks for sharing.

Nifty!

Hrm.  Needs more brass, and a TON of glass dial gauges to be proper steampunk...    =D

I best not tell my go-to guys at the shop about this. They stay late and run their museum-quality old engines and work on restoring others. Hit-or-miss one-lung engines, etc.

That's a prize indeed. I hope somebody gets it and restores it properly.

Awesome.

Leatherneck, if any of your friends at the shop have the money and inclination, the stuff can probably be taken for free. We're talking about a huge job, though.

FWIW, if anyone is in the area and wants to see it, it's the Douglas building, 257 (I think) Spring St. Controlled access, so you'll have to speak to building management. Or sneak in (and pick one lock).
