Recommendations for a 1/2" drive impact gun.
« on: July 29, 2018, 04:33:41 PM »
Need a new one. Air powered of course.
What's the hive mind say for best bang for the buck.
The Chinese one finally crapped out.
I've been very happy with the IR air ratchets that I have just done know if there a good choice for a gun. Would like to stay under 200 bucks if possible.

I would stretch the budget.

This is one of the tool places I don't skimp.  Longevity and torque require a good impact.

I really like my Snap-on MG 725, but they are proud of them.

I have a Sioux Tools impact in 3/8" and based on it's performance I'd by it's 1/2" Big Brother in a heartbeat if I needed a new one.

The IR 231 has been around forever, and is probably as low as I would skimp for an impact, but it's both heavier and weaker then the other two I linked.

Look at it this way, if a ratchet doesn't work, you're going to an impact, but if your impact doesn't work you're probably going to the torch.  You really want your impact to work.

Quick Amazon search puts that ir down around 120 the Sioux is still 320 on there. That's a bit high for my taste.

Biggest thing I would work on would be lugs on a half ton truck. Or maybe more parts on same truck once it gets older and I need to start doing suspension work.
Next biggest thing would be the 1 3/8 nuts that hold the blades on the mower.

And I'm not against using the blue tipped wrench when necessary.

According to Real Tool Reviews and AvE, the Earthquake line from Harsher Fate is the screaming deal of the century when it comes to impact wrenches.

I'm partial to Proto. Matco/Snap On quality at 2/3 the price.

Nitrocat 1200K if you can stretch the budget, IR 231 if not. Oh and iR makes a $100 one available at Tractor supply that is also a very good one too

I don’t buy HF air tools period I have had zero luck with them.

While a little on the heavy side pick up a 3/4 impact and adaptor from china tools inc.
Sometimes we carry more weight then we owe.
And sometimes goes on and on and on.

A 3/4 is generally overkill for the home user and the newer 1/2 drive impacts are generally as powerful as the cheaper 3/4 impacts

The adapters suck too. I sheared a HF one the first time I used it didn’t even get a second of use out of it and the sunex one I bought to replace it lasted about 10 uses

2235 is IR’s flagship model and they are very good

Generally IR makes quality air tools, at least if you buy the midrange to high quality ones (I don’t buy the bottom range stuff so have no experience with it). I have a needle gun, a 3/4 impact and a straight die grinder from them and they are all excellent. They cost a little more but you aren’t going to be pissed off 6 months down the road, either.

I have a cheaper IR model that works well.  But anymore, I use a dewalt 20v 1/2 drive impact for lugnuts, pulley bolts and suspension crap.

Yeah the battery powered impacts have come a long way in recent years in terms of power, size, battery life, etc. Plus, they're just damned convenient and often if you stock the same line from the maker the batteries are all interchangeable across a wide variety of tools.

For the home user esspecially there's not a hell of a lot you can do with air impacts that a decent battery pack one from (insert preferred brand here) won't do. And I can't think of anything you're describing for primary uses that would be an issue.

A lot of mechanics I know have been using their battery powered tools a lot more than their air tools of late.
