If the earlier post on living longer from being married doesn't appeal, get a dog. I ponder this sometimes when I get home and see who is happier to see me: the spouse or the dog.

That's funny. I was going to get into the other thread to ask how those results compare with results using other independent variables. Like, in fact, having a dog. (Which you have to walk twice a day.)

I want to cover all the bases. I’m married, have a dog and now recently a cat, and considering a goldfish or a turtle.
I’m thinking polygamy might move the marker into shorter lifespan territory.

There's a way to test this...
Lock your spouse and your dog in the trunk of your car for a couple of hours. When you open it later, which is going to be more happy to see you?

On a different note:
My wife has some social anxiety issues. She has a difficult time going into public and meeting new people.
Getting a dog has helps a lot on that front.
She can't take the dog out for a walk without meeting new people and coming back with a positive experience.
Her mother has some level of agoraphobia as well, but has been at my house this week taking care of my wife (she had a bad injury last week), and also commented on how much fun she had and the wonderful people she met just taking the dog to the park during the day.

^^^I have always said that if anything happens to my wife, I will find a new one by walking my dog in public. Especially when I am doing it alone, without my wife, the number of women who come up to me to chat about the dog is amazing. I call him my 'wingdog'.
