Back From The Night Club
« on: May 03, 2015, 02:31:22 AM »
As a favor to my brother, I watched over his wife and her also married best friend this evening.  We went... to a nightclub.  The people watching was as enjoyable as the overly loud music was not.  My biggest wish was for Blade Style vampires to be real so I could have the comfort of imagining some apex predator killing off the sorts of folks that frequent nightclubs.  I may be older now, early 30s, but I never did care for these places. A bane on the wallet, one's eardrums, and the ability to have continued belief in the innate dignity of man.

Lets see if I got this right. Your brother asked you to "watch" over his wife? What are you "watching" for?

Nothing more strenuous than women walking down dark city streets are far more unlikely to run into trouble if there is a large gentleman walking along with them.

I would think the husband should handle that.

Methinks the husband has some good reason for farming out this detail.  Especially as my Spidey senses are picking up "Girls' Night Out" vibes.

Yep, true that.

Yeah, sometimes the girls need time out to vent, and having their husbands/beaus/ SO's along impedes that.  So you get a trustworthy friend that can handle the detail to be safety for group.  Mugger Scarecrow/ groper on the dance floor/ watch for roofies/ DD.  I've pulled that detail several times, as well as had friends do it when my wife and her friends go out.

Should have shown up with your cheapest suit, sunglasses, and an ear piece.

I now wholly regret that missed opportunity. It will likely come round again and I do hope I remember the idea.

Beyond the whole mere presence impeding opportunists; the sister in law's friend pointed out a 'loser she knew in High School' and I happened to recognize the name as someone I was in Civil Air Patrol with . CAP is like Jr. ROTC, but Airforce; It let you get free flight training and air time as a teenager. I think the experience of flying a plane for free well worth a bit of hassle.  I remembered his name but, as we were never directly friends and its been something like 15 years, the face didn't click.  He certainly remembered me.  It frequently amazes me from little reunions with tertiary characters that some minor kindness and respect from a near stranger can give an imprint of being a superhero.  While just part of being a decent human being, golly does that pay dividends.

Classic!

Like Ned, I deplore the nightclub scene. I certainly spent time in them in my early twenties (for the chicks man!) but I have always hated crowded, noisy places, and nightclubs are the epitome of that. I'm sure there are plenty of people that go and enjoy it, and more power to them. I despise the "nightclub pros" though - those people that make it "their scene". I suppose for many of them, it's all they have in an otherwise mundane life, and it's where the McDonalds afternoon shift manager can be the king of the palace, at least for a little while, so I try not to be overly-judgmental, but man, they used to bug the hell out of me.

As a musician I have spent WAY too many hours in nightclubs and, being a "big guy" and who I am, I have escorted various pests out with little regard for their feelings on the matter. A female friend was out with the wife and I one night watching a friend's band at what could be best described as a Redneck Biker Bar(TM) and she complained of being "hit on" so I told her I would "handle it" and promptly started the rumor that "she" was our son who had "the operation." While she appreciated the "space" she was now getting she wasn't so fond of my methodology...

Me in my more vertical days...
I might not last very long or be very effective but I'll be a real pain in the ass for a minute!

I generally don't consider biker bars and taverns as nightclubs. At least the ones I've been to. I'll actually go to those kinds of places. We have a place here, up in the mountains on an old stagecoach road, that's 50% bikers, with the remainder an eclectic mix of cowboys, college kids, and families. Only open on the weekend. They do tri-tip sandwiches on an outdoor bbq, and have local bands playing good music. You can sit in the inside area if you want to be near noise, or you can wander the large outdoor area with your sammy and beer and listen to good music at a level that allows conversation.

I consider nightclubs to be as in the video below, which, as I was in my 20's in the 1980's, is the kind of place girls would drag me to, or buddies looking to hook up with girls would drag me to. I used to just sit in those places and wish for this:

I am definitely not going to speculate on what other husbandly duties are being farmed out.

Nope.

Not going to to do that.

Not at all.

Politicians and bureaucrats are considered productive if they swarm the populace like a plague of locust, devouring all substance in their path and leaving a swath of destruction like a firestorm. The technical term is "bipartisanship".

The local organization got a little too weird to keep the association.  I didn't, but going up and flying about a half dozen times and learning Bernoulli's Principle ect are things I am quite glad occurred.  There were even some cute girls.
